AD623Low-power instrumentation amplifier

Measure a small voltage difference with one gain resistor.

AD623 is an instrumentation amplifier for small differential measurements. Its matched input and subtraction stages reject voltage shared by the two inputs, while a resistor between pins 1 and 8 sets the differential gain. It supports a 2.7–12 V single supply or ±2.5–±6 V split supplies. Its input range can extend slightly below the negative rail under specified conditions, and its output approaches the rails with light loading. Gain-dependent internal headroom must still be checked. This reference selects the AD623ANZ through-hole and AD623ARZ surface-mount grades. A 1 kΩ gain resistor gives G = 101; with ±5 V supplies, grounded REF and inputs of 1.020 V and 1.000 V, the ideal output is 2.020 V.

Gain resistor terminal

Function

Inverting-side connection for the external gain resistor.

How to connect

Connect 1 kΩ to +RG8 for a nominal gain of 101.

Electrical note

Leaving both RG terminals open gives gain 1; never short them together.

At a glance

Low-power instrumentation amplifier

The gain resistor controls differential gain, while REF sets the output baseline. Input common mode and output loading determine the usable signal range.

Sense the input pair

The example inputs differ by 20 mV and have a common-mode voltage of 1.010 V. Both sources have a DC return to the supply midpoint.

Set the gain

A 1 kΩ resistor between −RG1 and +RG8 gives 1 + 100 / 1 = 101 V/V.

Reference the output

Grounding REF5 gives an ideal output of 101 × 0.020 = 2.020 V. Offset, resistor tolerance and loading add real errors.

AD623 uses G = 1 + 100 kΩ / RG. Its gain constant differs from AD620 and INA128; matching pin numbers alone do not make those devices interchangeable.

AD623 compact three-amplifier architecture with external gain resistor, matched difference stage and reference input.
Simplified functional cutaway. The gain resistor is external; the matching networks are inside the IC.
AD623ANZ with 1 kilohm gain resistor, 1.020 and 1.000 volt inputs, grounded REF, split five-volt rails and 2.020 volt ideal output.
Matching input labels connect. Ground symbols denote the 0 V midpoint, not the −5 V supply.
