Basics behind IR pair circuit for a line follower robot

iam interested to know about the theory behind the working of IR pair circuit used in line follower robot. i just always copy the circuit diagram from somewhere and interface it with micro-controller. but i want to know the working of circuit.
anyone give me any references??
