What should LabVIEW UTF-8 support change in an instrument-message parser?

LabVIEW 2026 Q3 adds UTF-8 support for multilingual interfaces. How should a project distinguish human-readable text from instrument packets that are defined as raw bytes?

If a serial protocol contains a length field and checksum, can text conversion change their interpretation? What tests would you add before upgrading an existing parser or saving received data as text?

Keep framing and checksum calculations in the protocol's byte domain. UTF-8 uses a variable number of bytes per character, so a character count is not necessarily the transmitted byte count. Decode only fields documented as text, using the encoding specified by the instrument. A binary payload may contain byte sequences that are invalid text but perfectly valid protocol data.

Create test packets containing zero bytes, values above 127, delimiter-like bytes inside the payload and truncated messages. Verify exactly which bytes the length and checksum cover. Test non-ASCII labels separately from the transport parser. A localized front-panel label should not silently change a device command, a numeric delimiter or the bytes included in a checksum.

For diagnostics, keep a hex representation or raw capture alongside decoded text. That allows another person to distinguish an encoding problem from a framing problem. Check file encoding and newline handling when exporting logs, especially if another application reads them. Upgrade tests should compare byte-for-byte command output as well as the appearance of the user interface.
