A port read observes the pin level, which can temporarily differ from the value written to the output latch. If software reads that level, changes one bit and writes the whole byte back, another bit may be written incorrectly. Using the corresponding latch register for output-state updates avoids basing the update on the external pin voltage.

This does not make an overloaded pin electrically valid. Check load current, capacitance, rise time and the device's output specifications. Use a suitable driver for loads the MCU cannot directly handle. If the output is also observed as an input, document which register is being read and what the reading is intended to represent.

Also check peripheral ownership, analog configuration and interrupt access to the same port. A latch-based update does not automatically make a multi-instruction software sequence atomic against another writer. Give shared output state a clear owner or protect the update appropriately, and verify the resulting waveform at the actual pin.
