An infrared LED sends light just beyond red, invisible to us but perfect for remote controls, obstacle sensors and night cameras. An ultraviolet LED sends light just beyond violet, used to cure glue, check banknotes and make things glow in the dark. Both are ordinary 5 mm LEDs to wire up, and both behave a little differently from the coloured ones.
