WHAT IS IT?
The Arduino Ethernet Rev3 board as one Proteus part: an UNO-sized board with the ATmega328P, a WIZnet W5100 Ethernet
chip, a micro SD socket and an RJ45 MagJack - no USB chip (a 6-pin FTDI header instead). The part looks like the real
board (the blue UNO outline, the jack where the UNO has its USB socket, the W5100 in the middle, the small ATmega328P,
the FTDI and ICSP headers on the right edge, the card over the analog pins) and works like it:
* The processor is Proteus's own ATmega328P model (the one our Arduino UNO V4.0 uses): the HEX file, the clock and
the fuses as on any Proteus AVR (PROGRAM, CLOCK). The 31 pins are the UNO V4.0's, in the same places.
* The W5100 is on the board's own SPI wiring: D13 SCK, D12 MISO, D11 MOSI and D10 its chip select - the same W5100
model as our Arduino Ethernet Shield. It runs the Arduino Ethernet library unchanged: the chip test, DHCP or a
fixed address, DNS, TCP client and server, UDP, NTP. Ethernet.hardwareStatus() is EthernetW5100.
* The micro SD socket is on the same bus with its chip select on D4, with a 64 MB card (the DEMO files: README.TXT,
HELLO.TXT, DATA.CSV, CONFIG.INI, BIG.TXT and two folders) for the SD library. A click on the socket takes the card
out / puts it back.
* On the real board D10 - D13 and D4 are taken by the W5100 and the card: leave them to the libraries. The user LED
is L9 on D9 (D13 is SPI's clock on this board) - LED_BUILTIN is 9 when the sketch is built for "Arduino Ethernet".
* The LEDs: ON (red, power), L9 (green, D9), and the W5100's LINK (green), RX (yellow) and TX (orange); the cable's
blue plug in the port while it is in.
* RESET: the button resets the ATmega328P and the W5100 together; on release the bootloader flashes L9 three times
and the sketch starts 1 s later (BOOTLOADER=NO: at once).
* The FTDI header: a click opens the built-in serial monitor on D0 / D1 (Board, Monitor and Plotter pages), as the
real board talks to the PC through an FTDI cable.
* The cable: the CABLE property (IN / OUT), a click on the RJ45 jack, or CABLE IN / CABLE OUT in the panel. Out:
nothing gets through; the TCP connections wait - back within 20 s, they carry on. In: on the network at once.
ONE DEVICE (search "ETHERNET" in Pick Devices):
ARDUINO ETHERNET REV3 "Arduino Ethernet" V1.0 (category Arduino > Arduino Boards), prefix ARD, model TEPNET.DLL with
Proteus's ATmega328P model (MODELS\AVR2.DLL, part of Proteus)
The network panel (a TEP pop-up window, the look of the TEP Serial Monitor - our own header, no Windows title bar; it
opens at Run, the PANEL pad or the W5100 opens it again). Tabs:
Wi-Fi a phone with three tabs - BROWSER (OPEN BOARD PAGE: the phone opens the page the sketch serves on
PAGEPORT), ROUTER (the router's clients - the board is listed as LAN) and CLOUD (the internet host's
requests); ETHERNET CABLE IN / OUT; the cards BOARD (the W5100, MAC, the commands, the LEDs), ETHERNET
(router, status, address, the link) and TRAFFIC
SPI the Ethernet library's socket commands and the router's answers, newest first (the chip test, SHAR, the
DHCP exchange, SIPR / GAR, OPEN / LISTEN / SEND / RECV / CLOSE); the link, the commands, the sockets;
the micro SD card (its files, commands, reads and writes)
Test web request test (the phone opens the page n times, measured) and cable test (the cable pulled for 3 s,
measured)

TEST STATUS
V1.0: verified in Proteus 8.5 on 23 Oct 2026 (the demo project as shipped, the windows off-screen, posted clicks and
keys), and on the PC with the real Arduino Ethernet library 2.0.2 against the W5100 model: the demo sketch (17 checks:
the card and INDEX.HTM, DHCP, the server, the phone's INDEX.HTM and its L9 ON link, /FILES, HELLO.TXT, DATA.CSV,
ACCESS.LOG, a missing file (404), the monitor's commands, the cable out and back, L9 OFF), plus the 66 checks of our
Ethernet shields and WIZnet modules (the same W5100 / W5500 model). What the Proteus run showed:
* EthernetRev3_File_Server: "Arduino Ethernet Rev3 - File Server", "SD: card ready", "SD: INDEX.HTM written",
"DHCP... OK", "IP: 192.168.1.101" and "Files on the web: http://192.168.1.101/". The Ethernet library found the
W5100 at 0.74 s (after the card), DHCP DISCOVER / OFFER and REQUEST / ACK by 0.80 s, the server listening at
0.86 s; ON and LINK lit, the cable's plug in.
* The laptop's /FILES: README.TXT - 372 bytes, HELLO.TXT - 31 bytes, DATA.CSV - 344 bytes, CONFIG.INI - 69 bytes,
BIG.TXT - 4380 bytes, INDEX.HTM - 308 bytes, ACCESS.LOG - 23 bytes (HTTP 200, 589 bytes in 0.27 s); HELLO.TXT
"Hello from the micro SD card!"; DATA.CSV "time_s,temp_c,humidity_pct" and its rows (HTTP 200, 408 bytes in
0.07 s).
* The phone's INDEX.HTM from the card: "Rev3 File Server", "Arduino Ethernet Rev3", "This page is INDEX.HTM on the
micro SD card.", L9 ON / L9 OFF / FILES / ACCESS.LOG (HTTP 200, 371 bytes in 0.07 s). Its L9 ON link: "L9 is ON"
(HTTP 200, 234 bytes in 0.14 s), L9 lit on the board; the monitor: "GET /L9ON from 192.168.1.41", "L9 ON (the
web page)".
* The laptop's ACCESS.LOG: "1 192.168.1.21 /FILES" ... "6 192.168.1.21 /ACCESS.LOG" (HTTP 200, 208 bytes in
0.07 s). The monitor: STATUS, FILES (the card's files with their sizes), LOG (the same six lines), HELP
"Commands: STATUS, FILES, LOG, HELP".
* The panel: the SPI page with the chip test, SHAR, DHCP, SIPR / GAR and the server's LISTEN; "64 MB card, 9 files -
ready (SD.begin)"; the router lists the board as a LAN client; web request test 3 of 3 (connect 4.0 ms, full page
67.6 - 67.7 ms, 371 bytes); cable test 3 of 3 - off the LAN at once, back 0.005 s after the cable went back in; the
laptop's /FILES loads again afterwards.
* Speed: the board + the laptop + the phone about 0.25 - 0.3 x real time on our PC (the Ethernet library reads the
W5100's registers about 24,000 times a second of simulation while the server waits).
INSTALLATION (about 3 minutes)
1. Close Proteus. Extract the WHOLE ZIP to a normal folder (e.g. Desktop).
2. Copy everything in "Proteus Library Files" to the LIBRARY folder of Proteus, for example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY
(on some PCs: C:\ProgramData\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY - use the folder that already holds
Proteus's own .LIB files). TEPETHREV3.LIB is the board; TEPLAPTOP.LIB and TEPMOBILE.LIB our Laptop WiFi Monitor and
Mobile WiFi Monitor.
3. Copy TEPNET.DLL from "Proteus Model Files" to the MODELS folder (...\Proteus 8 Professional\MODELS) - replace older
copies (this TEPNET.DLL is the first one that knows the Arduino Ethernet Rev3; it still runs our Ethernet shields,
our W5100, W5500 and ENC28J60 modules and every Wi-Fi part of the series). The ATmega328P model (AVR2.DLL) is
Proteus's own and is already there.
4. Delete TEPETHREV3.IDX, TEPLAPTOP.IDX and TEPMOBILE.IDX from the LIBRARY folder if they are there.
5. The Arduino IDE (only to compile your own sketches - the demo has its HEX file): the Ethernet and SD libraries come
with the IDE (Sketch > Include Library); choose Tools > Board > Arduino AVR Boards > Arduino Ethernet.
6. Start Proteus. In Pick Devices (P) search "ETHERNET".
RUN THE DEMO
Keep the .hex file and TEPNET.DLL beside the project in "Proteus Simulation".
Ethernet-Rev3-File-Server-with-Laptop-and-Mobile.pdsprj - ARD1 the Arduino Ethernet Rev3
(EthernetRev3_File_Server.hex, its monitor at 9600 bps) on its own - the W5100, the card and L9 are on the board, so
nothing is wired. PC1 the Laptop WiFi Monitor (home page http://192.168.1.101/FILES) and MOB1 the Mobile WiFi Monitor
(home page http://192.168.1.101/) - no wires, they are on the router's network.
Press Run. The monitor shows the card, INDEX.HTM written, DHCP and the address 192.168.1.101. Press Go in the
phone's Browser: INDEX.HTM from the card, with L9 ON / L9 OFF and the links FILES and ACCESS.LOG; tap L9 ON and L9
lights up on the board. Press Go in the laptop's Browser: the card's files as links with their sizes; open any of
them, or ACCESS.LOG with every request. In the monitor: STATUS, FILES, LOG, HELP.
PINS
The UNO V4.0's 31 pins, in the same places: D0 - D13, A0 - A5 (SDA / SCL on A4 / A5 and on the top header), AREF,
RESET, 5V, 3.3V, IOREF, VIN and GND. Taken on this board: D10 (the W5100's CS), D11 / D12 / D13 (SPI), D4 (the
card's CS); D9 drives L9; D0 / D1 are the FTDI header's serial port (the built-in monitor).
5V, 3.3V and IOREF are supply outputs (the board is powered); VIN has a 1 Mohm path to ground.
THE DEMO SKETCH (Arduino Code)
EthernetRev3_File_Server SD.begin(4), INDEX.HTM written at the first start; Ethernet.begin(mac) (DHCP);
an EthernetServer on port 80: / sends INDEX.HTM from the card, /FILES lists the card's
files as links with their sizes, /<NAME> sends any file of the card (.HTM as a page,
anything else as text), /L9ON and /L9OFF switch the LED on D9; every request is added to
ACCESS.LOG on the card with the client's address; a missing file answers 404; the
monitor's STATUS, FILES, LOG, HELP. Ethernet.maintain() in every loop.
PROPERTIES (double-click the board > Edit Properties)
PROGRAM the HEX file (Proteus's AVR model loads it)
CLOCK the ATmega328P's clock (16MHz)
BOOTLOADER YES (default): after RESET, L9 flashes 3 times and the sketch starts 1 s later; NO: at once
MONITOR the built-in serial monitor on D0 / D1 (YES, NO); BAUD its baud rate; AUTOOPEN the window at Run
ROUTER the router the cable goes to - the network name of the Wi-Fi parts (default TEP-WiFi)
CABLE the Ethernet cable at Run: IN (default) or OUT
SDCARD the micro SD card at Run: DEMO (default), EMPTY, RAW (not formatted) or NONE
PANEL the phone's tab at start (BROWSER, ROUTER, CLOUD)
PAGEPORT the port OPEN BOARD PAGE opens (default 80)
NETCLOCK the clock of NTP and the panel: PC (UTC), or a start time YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS (UTC)
Every run starts again from the properties. With DHCP the address follows the part's number: ARD1 192.168.1.101,
ARD2 .102 ... - give every network part its own number. The laptop is 192.168.1.21, the phone 192.168.1.41.
LINKS.INI (OPTIONAL)
The Help page cards open web pages. To point them somewhere else without a new DLL, put a text file named links.ini next
to TEPNET.DLL with lines KEY=URL, for example:
ARTICLE=https://www.theengineeringprojects.com/...
Keys: WEBSITE, FORUM, BUG_REPORT, FEATURE_REQUEST, ARTICLE, USER_GUIDE, UPDATE_CHECK, DONATE. Only http:// and https://
links are used; lines starting with # are comments.
TROUBLESHOOTING
* Nothing runs: double-click the board and set PROGRAM to the .hex file (as for any Proteus AVR).
* "SD: no card": the SDCARD property is NONE or the card was clicked out - click the socket.
* "DHCP" never answers: the cable is out (the panel shows CABLE OUT) - put it in with the panel or click the jack.
* D10 - D13 or D4 do strange things: they belong to the W5100 and the card on this board - use other pins.
* The page never opens: the sketch must call the library often - a long delay() in loop() keeps the server waiting.
* No monitor window: click the FTDI header, or set MONITOR=YES / AUTOOPEN=YES.
* A paused simulation shows the SIMULATION LOG: click the Schematic Capture tab.
* No panel: click the PANEL pad (or the W5100), or turn "Open the panel at Run" back on (Settings).

* Proteus is a product of Labcenter Electronics and is not included. Arduino is a name of Arduino; W5100 and WIZnet of
WIZnet. This library is not made or endorsed by Arduino, WIZnet or Labcenter.
REBUILDING THE FIRMWARE (OPTIONAL)
The HEX file is supplied; the Arduino IDE is not needed to run the demo. Open the sketch in Arduino Code with Tools >
Board > Arduino Ethernet, then Sketch > Export Compiled Binary. Flash / RAM: EthernetRev3_File_Server 28,412 /
1,294 bytes (of the board's 32,256 / 2,048; the rest of the RAM is the stack). Put the exported HEX in place of the
simulation's .hex (or set PROGRAM to it).
MODEL SCOPE AND LIMITS
Modelled: the ATmega328P (Proteus's own model, as on our UNO V4.0); the W5100's SPI frames, its common and socket
registers, its four sockets with their TX / RX buffers, TCP (client and server), UDP, the retry timeouts, the soft
reset and the board's RESET; the router's DHCP, DNS and NTP answers; the micro SD socket with our card model; the
LEDs ON, L9, LINK, RX, TX, the RESET button with the bootloader's flashes, the supply pins, the built-in serial monitor;
the router, the phone and the internet host shared with every TEP network part. Not modelled: the optional PoE module,
IPRAW / MACRAW traffic, the W5100's interrupt pin, the PHY's auto-negotiation and its real timing, the supply's current.
The model's own choices: the cable goes to the same router as the Wi-Fi parts; the LAN answers in about 2 ms; the
simulation runs below real time.

FAQs9 questionsContact TEP
How do I download Arduino Ethernet Rev3 Library for Proteus V1.0?
Wait for the 30-second guest countdown on this page, then press the download button; the file comes straight from our storage. Members who are logged in skip the wait. If the browser opens the file instead of saving it, use its Save as option.
What is inside the archive?
Arduino Ethernet Rev3 Library for Proteus V1.0 comes as a ZIP archive of 9 files (2.1 MB, 4.5 MB unpacked) holding Proteus library files, simulation model DLLs, a Proteus simulation, an Arduino sketch and compiled HEX firmware. Open the File Structure tab for the full list of 9 files.
What should I do if the download does not start?
Check the browser's download list first; an ad blocker or a company firewall can also hold it back, so try another browser or network. If the file arrives incomplete, download it again. For an installation problem, read the Install tab or tell us in the comments with your software version and the exact error message.
Is this file free?
Yes. Every file in the TEP Download Center is free for learning, personal and student projects. If you share it, link back to this page or the tutorial so others find the latest version.
How do I check that the file arrived complete?
Compare its SHA-256 with the one on this page, 3e4860b6e615a4c7fa90e01b93522dfcc9da59f77955b4eab3c7830905139daf. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash "arduino-ethernet-rev3-tep-v1-0-89acaa869886419b8bb3eeb7841eb760.zip"; on macOS or Linux run shasum -a 256 "arduino-ethernet-rev3-tep-v1-0-89acaa869886419b8bb3eeb7841eb760.zip". The same value means the file is exactly the one in our storage; a different one means the download broke off, so download it again.
Do I need WinRAR to open the ZIP file?
No. Windows, macOS and Linux open ZIP archives on their own (Extract All, or double-click). WinRAR and 7-Zip work too. Extract the whole archive before using the files.
Where do I put the LIB and IDX files?
Both files go into the LIBRARY folder of your Proteus installation (Proteus 8: C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY; Proteus 7 has the same folder under its own name). Restart Proteus afterwards and search for the component with P.
Which Proteus version does the library need?
The tutorial names the Proteus version the library was made and tested with. Most TEP libraries work in Proteus 7 and Proteus 8; if the component does not appear after a restart, check that both the LIB and the IDX file were copied and that Proteus was fully closed while copying.
How do I get the HEX file into the simulation?
Compile the sketch in the Arduino IDE (Sketch → Export Compiled Binary gives you the HEX next to the sketch), then in Proteus double-click the board, set Program File to that HEX and run.
Members skip the wait. Log in or join TEP.
