What should a first sensor-logger project demonstrate?

jackcroger Introduction Forum

For someone introducing their first embedded project, what would make a temperature logger a useful learning exercise rather than just a copied example? The proposed build uses a low-voltage development board, one digital sensor and serial logging.

Which milestones would show progress in wiring, firmware, measurement and debugging before adding wireless connectivity or an AI feature?

Begin with repeatable communication and a documented wiring diagram. Confirm the sensor's supply and logic-level requirements, identify its bus address and handle a disconnected device explicitly. Print both the raw data and converted value while learning. That makes it possible to tell whether an unexpected reading comes from the bus transaction, byte conversion or the physical measurement.

Add timestamps and a known sampling interval next. Record what happens when a read fails instead of silently substituting zero, because zero can be a legitimate temperature. Compare readings with a suitable reference and describe the conditions. Agreement at one room temperature does not establish accuracy across the sensor's range, but it can reveal a gross wiring or conversion error.

A useful final milestone is recovery: unplug the sensor, reconnect it, restart the board and interrupt the logging program. Explain which data are lost and how the system resumes. Once those behaviors are understood, add networking as a separate layer. A project introduction that includes a diagram, a short data sample and one measured limitation gives other members something concrete to discuss.
