The P-channel MOSFET is the switch of the high side: its source sits on the supply, the load hangs from its drain down to ground, and it connects or cuts the power to a whole circuit. It is how a battery-powered gadget switches its sensors off to save power, how a board protects itself against a reversed battery, and how a microcontroller turns on a 12 V load that must keep its ground connected.
