WHAT IS IT?
The red ENC28J60 Ethernet shield of the Arduino Nano as one Proteus part: a long, narrow board with a Microchip ENC28J60
(an Ethernet controller with its own 10 Mbit/s PHY and an 8 KB packet buffer), a 25 MHz crystal, an AMS1117 3.3 V
regulator, a HanRun RJ45 jack with its magnetics and two LEDs across one end and the two 15-pin header rows the Nano
plugs into, plus a red PWR LED (our addition). The ENC28J60 only sends and receives Ethernet frames: the TCP/IP stack
(uIP, inside the EthernetENC library) runs on the Arduino itself.
* The shield uses six of the Nano's pins, and the part has exactly those: 5V (the regulator makes the chip's 3.3 V),
GND and the SPI pins D13 (SCK), D11 (SI = the chip's data in = MOSI), D12 (SO = its data out = MISO) and D10 (CS).
On the real shield they are the socket's pins under the Nano; in Proteus wire them to the Arduino of the design
(the demo uses our UNO V4.0 - D10 - D13 are the same pins on an UNO). The chip's RESET, INT, WOL and CLKOUT are not
on the part: EthernetENC resets the chip over SPI and polls it.
* The model is the ENC28J60 itself, as EthernetENC (2.0.x) drives it - the same model as our ENC28J60 module: the SPI
instructions, the four register banks, the 8 KB buffer with its read and write pointers, the receive ring with its
6-byte header per packet, the receive filters, transmit with its status vector, the DMA copy and checksum, the PHY
registers (the link in PHSTAT2, the LEDs in PHLCON) and the interrupt flags. It runs EthernetENC from the Arduino
IDE unchanged - Ethernet.hardwareStatus() is EthernetENC28J60.
* The network behind the cable speaks frames with the Arduino's stack: ARP, the router's DHCP, DNS and NTP, ping, UDP
both ways and TCP both ways (client and server). EthernetENC's filter lets only ARP broadcasts in.
* Ethernet.linkStatus() reads the PHY: LinkON with the cable in, LinkOFF with it out.
* The LEDs: the red PWR LED (power) and the jack's green and yellow LEDs, which show what the sketch asks in PHLCON -
EthernetENC sets the green one to the link and the yellow one to the TX / RX activity; the cable's blue plug in the
port while it is in.
* The cable: the CABLE property (IN / OUT), a click on the RJ45 jack, or CABLE IN / CABLE OUT in the panel. Out:
nothing gets through; the TCP connections wait - back within 20 s, they carry on; after 20 s without a link they are
dropped. In: on the network at once, the same address.
The part is drawn our way in the shield's long, narrow shape (the red board, the jack across its left end, the Nano's
socket along its length with the ENC28J60 between the rows); its pins leave the right end, each named beside its end.

TEST STATUS
V1.0: verified in Proteus 8.5 on 23 Oct 2026 (the demo project as shipped, the windows off-screen, posted clicks and
keys), and on the PC with the real EthernetENC 2.0.5 (its ENC28J60 driver and the uIP stack) against the model: the
real demo sketch (10 checks: DHCP, NTP and the page line, the link to the laptop, the reports, LED ON, RATE / TIME /
STATUS, the commands on the monitor, the phone's page, the monitor's commands, the cable out and the new connection),
plus the 26 checks of the ENC28J60 module (the same chip model). What the Proteus run showed:
* ENC28J60_Nano_Reporter: "ENC28J60 Nano Reporter", "DHCP... OK", "IP: 192.168.1.101", "Gateway: 192.168.1.1, DNS:
192.168.1.1", "NTP: 06:56:15 UTC" and "Page: http://192.168.1.101/ Reports to 192.168.1.21:5000". EthernetENC
found the ENC28J60 (EREVID, rev. B7) 0.12 s after Run; DHCP DISCOVER, OFFER, REQUEST and ACK by 0.22 s; DNS
pool.ntp.org = 203.0.113.10 and the NTP answer by 0.43 s; PWR and the jack's green LED (the link) lit.
* The laptop joins the Wi-Fi 2.38 s after Run, so the first try found no server: "Laptop: no server on
192.168.1.21:5000 - trying again in 3 s". The ARP question "who has 192.168.1.21?" was answered once the laptop
was on (2.97 s); the next try connected (TCP SYN, SYN-ACK, ACK at 5.57 s) and the laptop's terminal showed "HELLO
from the Nano reporter" and "REPORT 1 06:56:20
A0=358 (1.75 V) LED OFF", then a report every 5 s.
* From the laptop's terminal: LED ON "OK LED ON" (D1 on D7 lit), RATE 2 "OK a report every 2 s" (the reports came
every 2 s), TIME "TIME 06:56:41 UTC", STATUS "STATUS 6 reports, 1 connects, every 2 s"; the UNO's monitor printed
each command ("Laptop: LED ON" ...).
* The phone's browser at http://192.168.1.101/: "Nano Reporter", "Time: 06:56:43 UTC", "A0: 358 (1.75 V) - LED ON",
"Laptop: connected, 7 reports" (HTTP 200, 263 bytes in 0.08 s). The monitor: STATUS "IP 192.168.1.101, link ON,
laptop connected, reports 7", TIME "Time 06:56:44 UTC", HELP "Commands: STATUS, TIME, HELP".
* The panel: the router lists the shield as a LAN client (192.168.1.101) next to the laptop and the phone; web
request test 3 of 3 (connect 5.0 - 5.1 ms, full page 76 - 77 ms); cable test 3 of 3 - off the LAN at once, back
0.005 s after the cable went back in.
* The cable out for 22 s of simulation (longer than the 20 s the connections wait): the green LED off, "no link - the
cable is out"; the connection to the laptop was dropped and the reports written meanwhile were lost (the numbers
jump from 17 to 20). Cable in: "Laptop: the link is down - connecting again", "Laptop: connected to
192.168.1.21:5000 (2)"; the laptop showed "closed the connection", then HELLO and the reports again.
* Speed: the UNO + the shield + the laptop + the phone about 0.25 - 0.35 x real time on our PC (EthernetENC reads the
ENC28J60's registers about 60,000 times a second of simulation while it waits for packets).
INSTALLATION (about 3 minutes)
1. Close Proteus. Extract the WHOLE ZIP to a normal folder (e.g. Desktop).
2. Copy everything in "Proteus Library Files" to the LIBRARY folder of Proteus, for example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY
(on some PCs: C:\ProgramData\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY - use the folder that already holds
Proteus's own .LIB files). TEPENC28J60NANO.LIB is the shield; ArduinoV4TEP.LIB our Arduino boards V4.0 (the UNO of
the demo); TEPLAPTOP.LIB and TEPMOBILE.LIB our Laptop WiFi Monitor and Mobile WiFi Monitor.
3. Copy TEPNET.DLL and TEPARDUINO.DLL from "Proteus Model Files" to the MODELS folder (...\Proteus 8
Professional\MODELS) - replace older copies (this TEPNET.DLL is the first one that knows the Nano shield; it still
runs our ENC28J60, W5100 and W5500 modules, our Ethernet shields and every Wi-Fi part of the series).
4. Delete TEPENC28J60NANO.IDX, ArduinoV4TEP.IDX, TEPLAPTOP.IDX and TEPMOBILE.IDX from the LIBRARY folder if they are
there.
5. The Arduino IDE (only to compile your own sketches - the demo has its HEX file): install EthernetENC with the Library
Manager (Sketch > Include Library > Manage Libraries, search "EthernetENC") and include <EthernetENC.h>.
6. Start Proteus. In Pick Devices (P) search "ENC28J60".
RUN THE DEMO
Keep the .hex file, TEPNET.DLL and TEPARDUINO.DLL beside the project in "Proteus Simulation".
ENC28J60-Nano-Reporter-with-Laptop-and-Mobile.pdsprj - ARD1 our UNO V4.0 (ENC28J60_Nano_Reporter.hex, its monitor at
9600 bps) with RV1 (POT-HG 10k) on A0 and R1 (220R) + D1 (LED-GREEN) on D7, and U1 the shield: D13, D12, D11 and D10
by net labels (SCK, MISO, MOSI, ETH_CS), 5V to a VCC terminal, GND to ground. PC1 the Laptop WiFi Monitor (its TCP
server on port 5000 starts at Run) and MOB1 the Mobile WiFi Monitor - no wires, they are on the router's network;
their home page is http://192.168.1.101/.
Press Run. The monitor shows DHCP, the address 192.168.1.101, the gateway, the NTP time and the page. The sketch
connects to the laptop's server (192.168.1.21:5000; it tries again every 3 s until the laptop is on the Wi-Fi) and
sends a REPORT line every 5 s (the time, A0 in volts, the LED). Type in the laptop's Terminal: LED ON, LED OFF,
RATE 2, TIME, STATUS. Open http://192.168.1.101/ in the phone's Browser (Go) for the Nano Reporter page. In the UNO's
monitor: STATUS, TIME, HELP. The panel's SPI page shows every frame.
PINS (beside the shield's right end)
5V power: 5 V (the shield's AMS1117 makes 3.3 V for the ENC28J60, whose inputs take 5 V logic)
GND ground
D10 CS chip select (LOW = selected)
D11 SI SPI data to the chip (MOSI)
D12 SO SPI data from the chip (MISO; the chip's while D10 is LOW, else it floats)
D13 SCK SPI clock
Without power (5V and GND) the shield is off (the panel shows "no power").
THE DEMO SKETCH (Arduino Code)
ENC28J60_Nano_Reporter Ethernet.init(10); Ethernet.begin(mac) (DHCP), the gateway and the DNS server; the time
from pool.ntp.org (EthernetUDP, NTP); an EthernetClient to the laptop's TCP server
192.168.1.21:5000: "HELLO from the Nano reporter", then "REPORT n hh:mm:ss A0=358 (1.75 V)
LED OFF" every 5 s; the laptop's lines LED ON / LED OFF / RATE <s> / TIME / STATUS are
answered on the same connection; if the link breaks it connects again (every 3 s); an
EthernetServer on port 80 serves the Nano Reporter page (the time, A0, the LED, the laptop
link); the monitor's STATUS, TIME, HELP. Ethernet.maintain() and the library calls in every
loop keep uIP answering.
PROPERTIES (double-click the shield > Edit Properties)
ROUTER the router the cable goes to - the network name of the Wi-Fi parts (default TEP-WiFi)
CABLE the Ethernet cable at Run: IN (default) or OUT
PANEL the phone's tab at start (BROWSER, ROUTER, CLOUD)
PAGEPORT the port OPEN SHIELD PAGE opens (default 80)
CLOCK the clock of NTP and the panel: PC (UTC), or a start time YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS (UTC)
Every run starts again from the properties. With DHCP the address follows the part's number: U1 192.168.1.101, U2 .102
... - give every network part its own number. The laptop is 192.168.1.21, the phone 192.168.1.41.
LINKS.INI (OPTIONAL)
The Help page cards open web pages. To point them somewhere else without a new DLL, put a text file named links.ini next
to TEPNET.DLL with lines KEY=URL, for example:
ARTICLE=https://www.theengineeringprojects.com/...
Keys: WEBSITE, FORUM, BUG_REPORT, FEATURE_REQUEST, ARTICLE, USER_GUIDE, UPDATE_CHECK, DONATE. Only http:// and https://
links are used; lines starting with # are comments.
TROUBLESHOOTING
* "no ENC28J60 found" (hardwareStatus() is EthernetNoHardware): check D13 / D12 / D11, D10 (and Ethernet.init(pin) when
CS is not D10), 5V and GND.
* "DHCP... no answer": the cable is out (the panel shows CABLE OUT; Ethernet.linkStatus() is LinkOFF) - put it in.
* "Laptop: no server on 192.168.1.21:5000": the laptop's TCP server is not listening on 5000 (its Terminal > TCP
Server, Start) or the laptop is still joining the Wi-Fi - the sketch tries again every 3 s.
* The page never opens: the sketch must call the library often - with a long delay() in loop() nothing answers, not
even ARP or a ping.
* A UDP broadcast never arrives: EthernetENC's filter drops broadcasts (only ARP gets in) - send to the shield's
address.
* A paused simulation shows the SIMULATION LOG: click the Schematic Capture tab.
* No panel: click the PANEL pad (or the ENC28J60), or turn "Open the panel at Run" back on (Settings).

LICENCES AND THIRD-PARTY NOTES
* The shield model, the Laptop / Mobile WiFi Monitors and the network (TEPNET.DLL), the Arduino board models
(TEPARDUINO.DLL), the symbols and artwork (TEPENC28J60NANO.LIB, ArduinoV4TEP.LIB, TEPLAPTOP.LIB, TEPMOBILE.LIB) are
made by The Engineering Projects. The UNO's processor is Proteus's own AVR model (Labcenter); RV1, R1 and D1 are
Proteus's own parts. The models use only standard Windows libraries; no Visual C++ redistributable is needed. The C++
source code of the models is not included.
* ENC28J60_Nano_Reporter.hex contains the Arduino AVR core 1.8.6 with its SPI library (LGPL 2.1,
https://github.com/arduino/ArduinoCore-avr/tree/1.8.6) and the EthernetENC library 2.0.5 by Norbert Truchsess and
Juraj Andrassy (GPL 3; the uIP stack by Adam Dunkels, BSD; source:
https://github.com/Networking-for-Arduino/EthernetENC, tag 2.0.5). The libraries are not shipped; the sketch is in
Arduino Code.
* 203.0.113.10 is a documentation address (no real server); pool.ntp.org answers through the model's internet host.
* Proteus is a product of Labcenter Electronics and is not included. ENC28J60 and Microchip are names of Microchip
Technology; HanRun of Zhongshan HanRun Electronic; Arduino and Nano of Arduino. This library is not made or endorsed
by Microchip, Arduino or Labcenter.
REBUILDING THE FIRMWARE (OPTIONAL)
The HEX file is supplied; the Arduino IDE is not needed to run the demo. Open the sketch in Arduino Code with Tools >
Board > Arduino Uno (or Arduino Nano for a real Nano; EthernetENC installed), then Sketch > Export Compiled Binary.
Flash / RAM: ENC28J60_Nano_Reporter 27,940 / 1,190 bytes (of the UNO's 32,256 / 2,048; the rest of the RAM is the
stack). Put the exported HEX in place of the simulation's .hex.
MODEL SCOPE AND LIMITS
Modelled: the ENC28J60's SPI instructions, its four register banks, the 8 KB buffer and its pointers, the receive ring,
the receive filters (unicast, broadcast, multicast, pattern match - the hash table and magic packets never match),
transmit with the status vector, the DMA copy and checksum, the PHY's link, LED setup and identity, the interrupt flags
and the system reset; the frames of ARP, DHCP, DNS, NTP, ICMP echo, UDP and TCP between the Arduino's stack and the
rest of the network; the PWR LED, the jack's LEDs and the cable; the router, the phone and the internet host shared
with every TEP network part. Not modelled: the regulator's voltage, the CLKOUT clock, wake-on-LAN, collisions, flow
control frames, power-save timing, the supply's current. The model's own choices: the cable goes to the same router as
the Wi-Fi parts; a frame takes its 10 Mbit/s time on the wire; the far end of a TCP connection sends one segment at a
time; with the cable out the TCP connections are kept for 20 s; the simulation runs below real time.

FAQs9 questionsContact TEP
How do I download ENC28J60 Nano Ethernet Shield Library for Proteus V1.0?
Wait for the 30-second guest countdown on this page, then press the download button; the file comes straight from our storage. Members who are logged in skip the wait. If the browser opens the file instead of saving it, use its Save as option.
What is inside the archive?
ENC28J60 Nano Ethernet Shield Library for Proteus V1.0 comes as a ZIP archive of 12 files (2.9 MB, 6.3 MB unpacked) holding Proteus library files, simulation model DLLs, a Proteus simulation, an Arduino sketch and compiled HEX firmware. Open the File Structure tab for the full list of 12 files.
What should I do if the download does not start?
Check the browser's download list first; an ad blocker or a company firewall can also hold it back, so try another browser or network. If the file arrives incomplete, download it again. For an installation problem, read the Install tab or tell us in the comments with your software version and the exact error message.
Is this file free?
Yes. Every file in the TEP Download Center is free for learning, personal and student projects. If you share it, link back to this page or the tutorial so others find the latest version.
How do I check that the file arrived complete?
Compare its SHA-256 with the one on this page, 44f8b4900ffa44d93ba76c3873896e78dce30e8e143ffa718e4b9af8d7699711. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash "enc28j60-nano-ethernet-shield-tep-v1-0-dd6bbe563eaa4d1c91e5d5579ee60edb.zip"; on macOS or Linux run shasum -a 256 "enc28j60-nano-ethernet-shield-tep-v1-0-dd6bbe563eaa4d1c91e5d5579ee60edb.zip". The same value means the file is exactly the one in our storage; a different one means the download broke off, so download it again.
Do I need WinRAR to open the ZIP file?
No. Windows, macOS and Linux open ZIP archives on their own (Extract All, or double-click). WinRAR and 7-Zip work too. Extract the whole archive before using the files.
Where do I put the LIB and IDX files?
Both files go into the LIBRARY folder of your Proteus installation (Proteus 8: C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY; Proteus 7 has the same folder under its own name). Restart Proteus afterwards and search for the component with P.
Which Proteus version does the library need?
The tutorial names the Proteus version the library was made and tested with. Most TEP libraries work in Proteus 7 and Proteus 8; if the component does not appear after a restart, check that both the LIB and the IDX file were copied and that Proteus was fully closed while copying.
How do I get the HEX file into the simulation?
Compile the sketch in the Arduino IDE (Sketch → Export Compiled Binary gives you the HEX next to the sketch), then in Proteus double-click the board, set Program File to that HEX and run.
