WHAT IS IT?
The box film capacitor, the neat red or green block in filters and audio circuits, drawn at true
scale: 7.2 mm long, 7.5 mm high, with two legs 5 mm apart, printing its own code. It is a true
analog part:
* A capacitance behind a very small series resistance (ESR). It has no polarity.
* The code on the box follows the value: 105J for 1 uF, 474J for 470 nF, and so on from 10 nF to
4.7 uF in the E6 series.
* A small bar shows the charge at Run.
* Too much voltage breaks it, and it opens. Fit a new part from the pop-up, or press Stop and Run.
* Click it at Run for its pop-up: the code explained, the charge, the energy, the live values,
graphs, an event log and a check page. Its chips step the value through the E6 series and
discharge it by hand.
The body is drawn as on the real part and to true scale against our Arduino.
The TEP signature and the pop-up are TEP additions.
TWO DEVICES (search "CAPFILM" in Pick Devices):
CAPFILMREDTEP "Film Capacitor Red V1.0"
CAPFILMGREENTEP "Film Capacitor Green V1.0"
Both are in TEPFILM.LIB (category Capacitors > Polyester Film), prefix C, model TEPFILM.DLL. Pins 1
and 2; either way round.
THE POP-UP
Click the part at Run. It stays closed until then (you can turn "Open the panel at Run" on in its
Settings page). Tabs:
Capacitor the state (EMPTY, CHARGING, HOLDING, DISCHARGING, OVER VOLTAGE, BURST), the box with
its code, the code explained, what it holds, and eight live values. The toolbar: E6 down, E6 up,
Discharge, New part.
Graphs the live values over the last 2, 6 or 15 s. Live / Freeze.
Event log every change and warning; filters All / Changes / Warnings, Pause, Clear
Check what the part is doing and what to look at, each with a verdict (green = fine, amber
= check, red = wrong)

TEST STATUS
V1.0: verified in Proteus 8.5 on 31 Oct 2026 (the demo project as shipped: an A4 sheet, an Arduino UNO V4.0).
What the runs showed (the model's own numbers and the sketch's monitor):
* The project loads and starts cleanly. The meter read 1.00 uF for the 1 uF on the sheet: 100.4 ms
to 63 %.
* The E6 chips stepped the value, and the meter followed: 3.30, 2.20, 1.50 and 1.00 uF, then 684,
474 and 333 nF for 680, 470 and 330 nF. The time ran a steady 0.3 to 0.4 ms long.
* The box printed 335J at 3.3 uF and 334J at 330 nF. The green LED lit when each reading was
ready.
* The pop-up: Capacitor, Graphs, Event log, Check - all four pages followed the run.
INSTALLATION (about 2 minutes)
1. Close Proteus. Extract the WHOLE ZIP to a normal folder (e.g. Desktop).
2. Copy everything in "Proteus Library Files" (TEPFILM.LIB, TEPRESISTOR.LIB, TEPLED5MM.LIB and our
Arduino library V4.0, ArduinoV4TEP.LIB, with the ARDUINO UNO V4.0 used by the demo) to the LIBRARY
folder of Proteus, for example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY
(use the folder that already holds Proteus's own .LIB files).
3. Copy TEPFILM.DLL, TEPRESISTOR.DLL, TEPLED5MM.DLL and TEPARDUINO.DLL from "Proteus Model Files" to
the MODELS folder (...\Proteus 8 Professional\MODELS).
4. Delete TEPFILM.IDX from the LIBRARY folder if it is there (Proteus makes a new index).
5. Start Proteus. In Pick Devices (P) search "CAPFILM".
RUN THE DEMO
"Proteus Simulation\Film-Capacitor-Meter-ArduinoUnoV4.pdsprj" (an A4 sheet) - keep the .hex file and
the DLLs beside the project.
ARD1: Arduino UNO V4.0 running Cap_Meter_Demo.hex, its serial monitor built in (window "TEP
Arduino UNO - ARD1").
R1, C1: the meter: D8, 100k, A0, 1 uF, GND.
R2: D9 through 220 ohm to A0: it empties C1 quickly between measurements.
D1: a green LED on D7 through 220 ohm, lit when a reading is ready.
1. Press Run. The sketch empties C1, charges it and times it to 63 %, about once a second.
2. C = time / R. The monitor prints the time and the value.
3. Click C1 and press E6 up or E6 down. The meter follows.
Closed the monitor? Click the UNO's USB port.
WIRING (the same in Proteus and on a real board)
D8 - 100k - A0 - capacitor - GND ; D9 - 220 ohm - A0
The time to 63 % is R x C, so a known R gives C.
REAL HARDWARE:
* The sketch's result is only as good as R1: measure it, or use a 1 % part.
* A0 draws almost nothing, but a very small capacitor charges faster than the sketch can time it.
Use a bigger resistor for those.
* Discharge a capacitor before you connect it to a pin.
THE DEMO SKETCH ON THE SERIAL MONITOR (Cap_Meter_Demo V1.0, 9600 baud)
There are no commands. The sketch prints a reading about once a second.
EXPECTED MONITOR OUTPUT
Film Capacitor meter - The Engineering Projects
PROPERTIES (double-click the part > Edit Properties)
Capacitance 1u, 470n, 100n (a bare number is in uF)
Voltage rating, V 63
Series resistance (ESR), ohm 0.02
Printed code while stopped picks the code shown on the box; Run sets it from the Capacitance
box
Every run starts again from the properties.
LINKS.INI (OPTIONAL)
The Help page cards of the pop-up open web pages. To point them somewhere else without a new DLL,
put a text file named links.ini next to TEPFILM.DLL with lines KEY=URL, for example:
ARTICLE=https://www.theengineeringprojects.com/...
Keys: WEBSITE, FORUM, BUG_REPORT, FEATURE_REQUEST, ARTICLE, USER_GUIDE,
UPDATE_CHECK, DONATE. Only http:// and https:// links are used; lines starting
with # are comments.
TROUBLESHOOTING
* The code on the box does not match the value: press Run once. The model sets the code from the
Capacitance box, to the nearest E6 value.
* BURST: it saw too much voltage. Fix the circuit, then New part.
* The meter prints no capacitor: C1 is open, or more than 30 uF.
* The pop-up does not open: click the part at Run (it stays closed until then).
* The part is not simulated: TEPFILM.DLL is missing from MODELS and from the project folder. No UNO
/ no monitor window: TEPARDUINO.DLL is missing, or click the UNO's USB port.

LICENCES AND THIRD-PARTY NOTES
* The model (TEPFILM.DLL), the symbols and artwork, the other parts of ours in the demo and the
Arduino Library V4.0 (ArduinoV4TEP.LIB / TEPARDUINO.DLL, with its built-in TEP Serial Monitor
Advance) are made by The Engineering Projects. The models use only standard Windows libraries; no
Visual C++ redistributable is needed.
The C++ source code is not included.
* Arduino UNO V4.0 (ArduinoV4TEP.LIB / TEPARDUINO.DLL, our Arduino Library V4.0 - its
microcontroller is Proteus's own AVR model): The Engineering Projects,
https://www.theengineeringprojects.com/2026/10/arduino-uno-library-for-proteus-v40.html
* The .hex file is built from the demo sketch and the Arduino AVR core 1.8.6, which includes
LGPL-licensed code; its source code is available at
https://github.com/arduino/ArduinoCore-avr/tree/1.8.6
* Proteus is a product of Labcenter Electronics and is not included. Arduino is a trademark of Arduino SA.
This library is not made or endorsed by Arduino or Labcenter.
REBUILDING THE FIRMWARE (OPTIONAL)
The HEX file is supplied; Arduino IDE is not needed to run the demo. To edit the sketch, open
Arduino Code\Cap_Meter_Demo\Cap_Meter_Demo.ino, select Arduino Uno and use Sketch > Export Compiled
Binary. Replace the simulation's .hex with the exported HEX. The sketch needs 5,182 bytes of flash
and 213 bytes of RAM.
MODEL SCOPE AND LIMITS
Modelled: the capacitance, the ESR, a very slow self-discharge, the charge and stored energy,
heating under over voltage, breaking and opening. The printed code follows the value.
Not modelled: the self-healing of metallised film, the part's inductance, the tolerance.

FAQs9 questionsContact TEP
How do I download Film Capacitor Library for Proteus V1.0?
Wait for the 30-second guest countdown on this page, then press the download button; the file comes straight from our storage. Members who are logged in skip the wait. If the browser opens the file instead of saving it, use its Save as option. The download link is made for you when the countdown ends and works for 15 minutes; a saved or shared link stops working, so share this page instead.
What is inside the archive?
Film Capacitor Library for Proteus V1.0 comes as a ZIP archive of 16 files (1.8 MB, 4.1 MB unpacked) holding Proteus library files, simulation model DLLs, a Proteus simulation, an Arduino sketch and compiled HEX firmware. Open the File Structure tab for the full list of 16 files.
What should I do if the download does not start?
Check the browser's download list first; an ad blocker or a company firewall can also hold it back, so try another browser or network. If the file arrives incomplete, download it again. For an installation problem, read the Install tab or tell us in the comments with your software version and the exact error message.
Is this file free?
Yes. Every file in the TEP Download Center is free for learning, personal and student projects. If you share it, link back to this page or the tutorial so others find the latest version.
How do I check that the file arrived complete?
Compare its SHA-256 with the one on this page, dbbe419142865a49b9e03f1bd1dbad4f7aa790f3f4980e7384b1d602615a29b8. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash "film-capacitor-tep-v1-0-fb33b2978b53434a9112b6b18604f34a.zip"; on macOS or Linux run shasum -a 256 "film-capacitor-tep-v1-0-fb33b2978b53434a9112b6b18604f34a.zip". The same value means the file is exactly the one in our storage; a different one means the download broke off, so download it again.
Do I need WinRAR to open the ZIP file?
No. Windows, macOS and Linux open ZIP archives on their own (Extract All, or double-click). WinRAR and 7-Zip work too. Extract the whole archive before using the files.
Where do I put the LIB and IDX files?
Both files go into the LIBRARY folder of your Proteus installation (Proteus 8: C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY; Proteus 7 has the same folder under its own name). Restart Proteus afterwards and search for the component with P.
Which Proteus version does the library need?
The tutorial names the Proteus version the library was made and tested with. Most TEP libraries work in Proteus 7 and Proteus 8; if the component does not appear after a restart, check that both the LIB and the IDX file were copied and that Proteus was fully closed while copying.
How do I get the HEX file into the simulation?
Compile the sketch in the Arduino IDE (Sketch → Export Compiled Binary gives you the HEX next to the sketch), then in Proteus double-click the board, set Program File to that HEX and run.
Members skip the wait. Log in or join TEP.
