WHAT IS IT?
The tantalum chip capacitor, the small yellow block on many boards, drawn at true scale: a case D
chip, 7.3 x 4.3 mm, with its brown band and its two metal ends, printing its own three-digit code.
It is a true analog part:
  * A capacitance behind a series resistance (ESR): it charges and smooths on the real curves in any
    circuit.
  * The code on the chip follows the value: 476 for 47 uF, 106 for 10 uF, and so on from 1 uF to 220
    uF in the E6 series.
  * A small bar shows the charge at Run.
  * It is polarised, and the band marks the PLUS end. That is the opposite of an electrolytic.
  * Reverse it, or put too much voltage on it, and it heats. Past its limit it chars and fails
SHORT, as a real tantalum does, and stays a dead short across the supply. Fit a new part from
the pop-up, or press Stop and Run.
  * Click it at Run for its pop-up: the code explained, the charge, the energy, the live values,
graphs, an event log and a check page.
The body is drawn as on the real part and to true scale against our Arduino.
The TEP signature and the pop-up are TEP additions.

ONE DEVICE (search "CAPTANTALUM" in Pick Devices):
CAPTANTALUMTEP "Tantalum Capacitor V1.0" in TEPTANTALUM.LIB (category Capacitors > Tantalum
SMD), prefix C, model TEPTANTALUM.DLL. Pins + (the band) and -.

THE POP-UP
Click the part at Run. It stays closed until then (you can turn "Open the panel at Run" on in its
Settings page). Tabs:
Capacitor the state (EMPTY, CHARGING, HOLDING, DISCHARGING, OVER VOLTAGE, REVERSED, SHORTED),
the chip with its code, the code explained, what it holds, and eight live values. The toolbar:
E6 down, E6 up, Discharge, New part.
Graphs the live values over the last 2, 6 or 15 s. Live / Freeze.
Event log every change and warning; filters All / Changes / Warnings, Pause, Clear
Check what the part is doing and what to look at, each with a verdict (green = fine, amber
    = check, red = wrong)
Settings theme, text size, open at Run, window size

TEST STATUS
V1.0: verified in Proteus 8.5 on 31 Oct 2026 (the demo project as shipped: an A4 sheet, an Arduino UNO V4.0).
What the runs showed (the model's own numbers and the sketch's monitor):
  * The project loads and starts cleanly. 50 % PWM gave about 2.5 V on A0, 25 % gave 1.24 V and 75 %
    gave 3.75 V.
  * The ripple at 75 % duty grew as E6 down stepped C1 from 47 uF to 33, 22 and 15 uF: 0.039 V,
    0.054 V, 0.083 V and 0.122 V, close to the formula. The chip printed 156 at 15 uF.
  * reverse: C2 saw -5.00 V and read REVERSED; a few seconds later it charred and failed short, and
20.8 mA flowed through it from D8. Stop and Run, or New part, brings it back.
  * The pop-up: Capacitor, Graphs, Event log, Check - all four pages followed the run.

INSTALLATION (about 2 minutes)
1. Close Proteus. Extract the WHOLE ZIP to a normal folder (e.g. Desktop).
2. Copy everything in "Proteus Library Files" (TEPTANTALUM.LIB, TEPRESISTOR.LIB and our Arduino
library V4.0, ArduinoV4TEP.LIB, with the ARDUINO UNO V4.0 used by the demo) to the LIBRARY folder of
Proteus, for example:
     C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY
(use the folder that already holds Proteus's own .LIB files).
3. Copy TEPTANTALUM.DLL, TEPRESISTOR.DLL and TEPARDUINO.DLL from "Proteus Model Files" to the MODELS
folder (...\Proteus 8 Professional\MODELS).
4. Delete TEPTANTALUM.IDX from the LIBRARY folder if it is there (Proteus makes a new index).
5. Start Proteus. In Pick Devices (P) search "CAPTANTALUM".

RUN THE DEMO
"Proteus Simulation\Tantalum-PWM-Filter-ArduinoUnoV4.pdsprj" (an A4 sheet) - keep the .hex file and
the DLLs beside the project.
ARD1: Arduino UNO V4.0 running Tantalum_Filter_Demo.hex, its serial monitor built in (window
  "TEP Arduino UNO - ARD1").
  R1, C1: the PWM filter: D9, 1k, A0, 47 uF, GND. R x C = 47 ms.
R2, C2: the warning: C2 (10 uF) stands the wrong way round, its band on GND, its other end on D8
  through 220 ohm.
  1. Press Run. Each second the monitor prints the voltage and the ripple on A0.
  2. Type 25 or 75 in the monitor to change the PWM duty.
  3. Press E6 down on C1's pop-up a few times, and watch the ripple grow.
  4. Type reverse: C2 sees 5 V backwards, heats, and fails short.
Closed the monitor? Click the UNO's USB port.

WIRING (the same in Proteus and on a real board)
  D9 - 1k - A0 - capacitor + , capacitor - - GND
The filter's time constant must be far longer than one PWM cycle (2 ms at 490 Hz).
REAL HARDWARE:
 * The band marks the PLUS end. On an electrolytic the stripe marks the minus: do not mix them up.
 * Use it at half its rated voltage or less, on a strong supply even lower.
 * It fails short, and on a strong supply it can burn with a flame. Add a series resistance or a
   fuse where you can.

THE DEMO SKETCH ON THE SERIAL MONITOR (Tantalum_Filter_Demo V1.0, 9600 baud)
0 to 100 the PWM duty in percent
reverse put 5 V across C2 the wrong way
  safe take it off again
EXPECTED MONITOR OUTPUT

PROPERTIES (double-click the part > Edit Properties)
Capacitance 47u, 10u, 4u7 (a bare number is in uF)
  Voltage rating, V 16
  Series resistance (ESR), ohm 0.3
Printed code while stopped picks the code shown on the chip; Run sets it from the Capacitance
  box
Every run starts again from the properties.

LINKS.INI (OPTIONAL)
The Help page cards of the pop-up open web pages. To point them somewhere else without a new DLL,
put a text file named links.ini next to TEPTANTALUM.DLL with lines KEY=URL, for example:
  ARTICLE=https://www.theengineeringprojects.com/...
Keys: WEBSITE, FORUM, BUG_REPORT, FEATURE_REQUEST, ARTICLE, USER_GUIDE,
UPDATE_CHECK, DONATE. Only http:// and https:// links are used; lines starting
with # are comments.

TROUBLESHOOTING
* The code on the chip does not match the value: press Run once. The model sets the code from the
Capacitance box, to the nearest E6 value.
* SHORTED: it was reversed or over voltage, and it now shorts the circuit. Fix the circuit, then New
  part.
* A0 reads a wide ripple: R x C is too small for the PWM.
* The pop-up does not open: click the part at Run (it stays closed until then).
* The part is not simulated: TEPTANTALUM.DLL is missing from MODELS and from the project folder. No
UNO / no monitor window: TEPARDUINO.DLL is missing, or click the UNO's USB port.

LICENCES AND THIRD-PARTY NOTES
* The model (TEPTANTALUM.DLL), the symbols and artwork, the other parts of ours in the demo and the
  Arduino Library V4.0 (ArduinoV4TEP.LIB / TEPARDUINO.DLL, with its built-in TEP Serial Monitor
Advance) are made by The Engineering Projects. The models use only standard Windows libraries; no
  Visual C++ redistributable is needed.
The C++ source code is not included.
* Arduino UNO V4.0 (ArduinoV4TEP.LIB / TEPARDUINO.DLL, our Arduino Library V4.0 - its
microcontroller is Proteus's own AVR model): The Engineering Projects,
  https://www.theengineeringprojects.com/2026/10/arduino-uno-library-for-proteus-v40.html
* The .hex file is built from the demo sketch and the Arduino AVR core 1.8.6, which includes
LGPL-licensed code; its source code is available at
  https://github.com/arduino/ArduinoCore-avr/tree/1.8.6
* Proteus is a product of Labcenter Electronics and is not included. Arduino is a trademark of Arduino SA.
This library is not made or endorsed by Arduino or Labcenter.

REBUILDING THE FIRMWARE (OPTIONAL)
The HEX file is supplied; Arduino IDE is not needed to run the demo. To edit the sketch, open
Arduino Code\Tantalum_Filter_Demo\Tantalum_Filter_Demo.ino, select Arduino Uno and use Sketch >
Export Compiled Binary. Replace the simulation's .hex with the exported HEX. The sketch needs 6,228
bytes of flash and 244 bytes of RAM.

MODEL SCOPE AND LIMITS
Modelled: the capacitance, the ESR, a slow self-discharge, the charge and stored energy, heating
under reverse or over voltage, and the short that follows.
Not modelled: the flame of a real failure, the self-healing of polymer types, the change of value
with temperature, the part's inductance.

How to add a library in Proteus 8

FAQs9 questionsContact TEP

How do I download Tantalum Capacitor Library for Proteus V1.0?

Wait for the 30-second guest countdown on this page, then press the download button; the file comes straight from our storage. Members who are logged in skip the wait. If the browser opens the file instead of saving it, use its Save as option. The download link is made for you when the countdown ends and works for 15 minutes; a saved or shared link stops working, so share this page instead.

What is inside the archive?

Tantalum Capacitor Library for Proteus V1.0 comes as a ZIP archive of 13 files (1.5 MB, 3.5 MB unpacked) holding Proteus library files, simulation model DLLs, a Proteus simulation, an Arduino sketch and compiled HEX firmware. Open the File Structure tab for the full list of 13 files.

What should I do if the download does not start?

Check the browser's download list first; an ad blocker or a company firewall can also hold it back, so try another browser or network. If the file arrives incomplete, download it again. For an installation problem, read the Install tab or tell us in the comments with your software version and the exact error message.

Is this file free?

Yes. Every file in the TEP Download Center is free for learning, personal and student projects. If you share it, link back to this page or the tutorial so others find the latest version.

How do I check that the file arrived complete?

Compare its SHA-256 with the one on this page, 7cae3f96a9f6ee31bf0687a757a026dcc47ed37e893e153678b66a2ab4ff2fc7. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash "tantalum-capacitor-tep-v1-0-3acefcecdddc4eb59e777f6ee3578b1a.zip"; on macOS or Linux run shasum -a 256 "tantalum-capacitor-tep-v1-0-3acefcecdddc4eb59e777f6ee3578b1a.zip". The same value means the file is exactly the one in our storage; a different one means the download broke off, so download it again.

Do I need WinRAR to open the ZIP file?

No. Windows, macOS and Linux open ZIP archives on their own (Extract All, or double-click). WinRAR and 7-Zip work too. Extract the whole archive before using the files.

Where do I put the LIB and IDX files?

Both files go into the LIBRARY folder of your Proteus installation (Proteus 8: C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY; Proteus 7 has the same folder under its own name). Restart Proteus afterwards and search for the component with P.

Which Proteus version does the library need?

The tutorial names the Proteus version the library was made and tested with. Most TEP libraries work in Proteus 7 and Proteus 8; if the component does not appear after a restart, check that both the LIB and the IDX file were copied and that Proteus was fully closed while copying.

How do I get the HEX file into the simulation?

Compile the sketch in the Arduino IDE (Sketch → Export Compiled Binary gives you the HEX next to the sketch), then in Proteus double-click the board, set Program File to that HEX and run.
