WHAT IS IT?
A simulation model of the car door lock actuator - the small "motor" inside a
car door (and in every aftermarket central-locking kit) that pulls the lock's
rod in or pushes it out. A DC motor turns a gear train and a rack; the steel
rod moves 20 mm. Makers use it for drawer and cabinet locks, pet doors, props
and small linear jobs. This is the 5-wire "master" type: two wires for the
motor and three for its position switch. Our own model:
* The motor is in the circuit between M+ and M-: 4.0 ohm, 1.5 mH and its
back-EMF. M+ positive pulls the rod IN (LOCK), M- positive pushes it OUT
(UNLOCK). The gears turn 0.15 mm of rod for each radian of the motor; they
are not self-locking - the key or the knob moves the rod by hand through
the actuator's clutch.
* The rod stops dead at 0 and 20 mm. Driven into a stop, the motor stalls:
about 2.9 A on 12 V. The actuator only wants a pulse - the stroke takes
about 0.2 s; a controller gives it 0.3 - 0.5 s and then cuts the power.
* The position switch: SL to S within 6 mm of the IN end (locked), SU to S
within 6 mm of the OUT end (unlocked), open between.
* The load: BENCH (nothing on the rod), DOOR (the lock's linkage, 10 N of
friction and an over-centre spring that holds it at either end) or
JAMMED (a frozen or bent lock: the rod blocked half-way, at 10 mm).
* The watch: LOCKED / UNLOCKED (the stroke time, the current on the way),
the PULSE (how long of it the motor stalled at the stop), MOVED BY HAND,
the load, and the warnings STOPPED MID-STROKE, JAMMED, HELD AT THE STOP
and HOT.
The symbol shows the actuator from the side: the black plastic case with its
two mounting ears and its seam, the rod guide, the rubber boot and the steel
rod with its eye; the 5-way plug on the left. At Run the rod moves in and out.
The plate, the ON LED (green while current flows), the 0 - 20 mm scale, the
padlock (closed red = locked, open green = unlocked, amber between), the
rating line and the strip under the plate (ROD, CURRENT, STATE, OPEN PANEL)
are TEP additions; the real actuator has none of them.

TEST STATUS
V1.0: verified in Proteus 8.5 on 29 Oct 2026 (the demo project as shipped: an
A3 sheet, an Arduino UNO V4.0 with its built-in monitor, our 2-channel relay
module - its pop-up version, from its own library - wired as the central-
locking circuit, the actuator on the door lock with the rod out and RV1 at 50
%; all pop-ups open). What the run showed:
* The project loads and starts cleanly, "The rod: UNLOCKED (SU closed)".
"pulse 1000" and "lock": paused inside the pulse - the pop-up "LOCKING -
THE ROD AT 5.0 MM, 1.2 A", +11.9 V, 23 N; the ON LEDs lit (UNO, relay,
actuator); the relay's pop-up "K1 ON - 1 OF 2 RELAYS", "NO closed: 1.23
A"; then "LOCKED - the rod in after 0.22 s (20.0 mm, 1.8 A on the way)"
and "PULSE 1.00 s to LOCK - 0.77 s of it stalled at the stop, 2.9 A".
* "knob" ("Pulse from RV1: 525 ms") and "unlock": "UNLOCKED - the rod out
after 0.22 s (20.0 mm, 1.7 A on the way)", "PULSE 0.52 s to UNLOCK -
0.30 s of it stalled at the stop, 2.9 A"; the monitor "Done - UNLOCKED
(SU closed)". "lock": "LOCKED - the rod in after 0.23 s".
* "pulse 100" and "unlock": "STOPPED MID-STROKE at 7.7 mm - the pulse (0.10
s) ended first: give it 0.3 s or more"; the monitor "NOT done - the rod
between the ends (neither switch closed)".
* "knob" and "unlock": "UNLOCKED - the rod out after 0.16 s (12.3 mm, 1.9 A
on the way)". The Lock by hand chip: "MOVED BY HAND - LOCKED with the key
or the knob (the switch: SL closed)"; the monitor "Moved by hand - LOCKED
(SL closed)".
* The Jammed chip and "unlock": "JAMMED at 10.0 mm - 2.8 A and the rod does
not move (a frozen or blocked lock?)", 53 N at the rod; Check: Load and
Current red. The Door lock chip and "unlock": "UNLOCKED - the rod out
after 0.13 s (10.0 mm, 1.9 A on the way)"; Check at the end: 5 full
strokes, the windings at 37 C.
Plus automatic checks on a PC, 0 failed: 13 on the actuator (a 0.45 s lock
pulse on the door lock: the stroke in 0.222 s, 2.91 A at the stop, SL
closed; the unlock: SU closed; the bench 0.181 s; a 110 ms pulse stops the
rod at 10.37 mm and it stays there; JAMMED at 10.0 mm; held 3 s: HELD AT THE
STOP; by hand: MOVED BY HAND; held 60 s: 190 C (HOT); a 24 V actuator on 24
V: 0.219 s, 1.49 A) and 2 on the pop-up (every page painted, 18.3 ms at the
most).
INSTALLATION (about 2 minutes)
1. Close Proteus. Extract the WHOLE ZIP to a normal folder (e.g. Desktop).
2. Copy everything in "Proteus Library Files" (TEPDOORLOCK.LIB and our Arduino
library V4.0, ArduinoV4TEP.LIB) to the LIBRARY folder of Proteus, for
example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY
(on some PCs: C:\ProgramData\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\
LIBRARY - use the folder that already holds Proteus's own .LIB files).
3. Copy TEPDOORLOCK.DLL and TEPARDUINO.DLL from "Proteus Model Files" to the
MODELS folder (...\Proteus 8 Professional\MODELS). The demo's relay module
is NOT in this package: install our Relay Module library the same way (its
own ZIP - see IMPORTANT LINKS): TEPRELAY.LIB and TEPRELAY.DLL.
4. Delete TEPDOORLOCK.IDX from the LIBRARY folder if it is there.
5. Start Proteus. In Pick Devices (P) search "door lock".
RUN THE DEMO
"Proteus Simulation\Car-Door-Lock-Actuator-Relay-ArduinoUnoV4.pdsprj" - keep
the .hex file and the DLLs beside the project (with the Relay Module library
installed).
ARD1: Arduino UNO V4.0 running Lock_Demo.hex, its serial monitor built in
(window "TEP Arduino UNO - ARD1").
RLY1: our 2-channel relay module (pop-up version, a separate library): IN1
on D7, IN2 on D8, VCC, GND; relay 1: COM1 on MA, NO1 on +12V, NC1 on
GND; relay 2: COM2 on MB, NO2 on +12V, NC2 on GND - by net labels.
M1: the actuator (LOAD=DOOR, START=UNLOCKED): M+ on MA, M- on MB, SL on
D4, SU on D5, S to ground.
RV1: 10k pot on A0 (the pulse, 50 - 1000 ms; 50 % = 525 ms).
1. Press Run. The monitor and the two pop-ups open (move them aside). The
rod is out (unlocked).
2. Type in the monitor and press Send: lock, unlock, pulse 100, knob, status.
3. On the actuator's pop-up: Bench, Door lock, Jammed, Lock by hand, Unlock
by hand.
4. Double-click M1: VOLTAGE (12 / 24), LOAD (BENCH / DOOR / JAMMED), START
(UNLOCKED / LOCKED).
WIRING (the same idea in a car or a project)
The central-locking circuit - two relays, one for each motor wire:
relay 1 COM - M+; NO - +12 V (fused, 10 A); NC - ground
relay 2 COM - M-; NO - +12 V; NC - ground
switch S - ground; SL, SU - two inputs with pull-ups
Both relays off: both wires on ground - the motor brakes. Relay 1 on: LOCK.
Relay 2 on: UNLOCK. Never both on.
In the sketch (no library needed): the relay inputs are active LOW:
digitalWrite(RELAY_LOCK, LOW); delay(500); digitalWrite(RELAY_LOCK, HIGH); // a lock pulse
REAL HARDWARE:
* About 1.5 - 2 A on the way and about 3 A stalled at the stop (more for the
"heavy duty" types) - relays or an H-bridge, a fuse, never an Arduino pin.
* Give it a pulse of 0.3 - 0.5 s and then cut the power: held at the stop it
heats and burns out.
* A 2-wire "slave" actuator is the same motor without the switch.
* Read SL / SU (or a door's own lock switch) to know whether it really
locked - a frozen lock stops it half-way.
THE DEMO SKETCH ON THE SERIAL MONITOR (Lock_Demo V1.0, 9600 baud)

EXPECTED MONITOR OUTPUT
Car Door Lock Actuator demo - The Engineering Projects
Relay 1 (D7): M+ to +12 V = lock. Relay 2 (D8): M- to +12 V = unlock. Switch: SL D4, SU D5. RV1: the pulse.
Commands: lock | unlock | pulse 100 | knob | status | help
The rod: UNLOCKED (SU closed)
PROPERTIES (double-click the part > Edit Properties)
VOLTAGE the actuator's voltage: 12 or 24 (a truck actuator); default 12
LOAD the load on the rod: BENCH, DOOR or JAMMED; default DOOR
START the rod at the start: UNLOCKED (out) or LOCKED (in)
Every run starts again from the properties.
TROUBLESHOOTING
* It does not move and nothing is logged: no supply on M+ / M-, or the relays
are not driven.
* STOPPED MID-STROKE: the pulse is too short - give it 0.3 s or more.
* JAMMED: the Jammed load (a frozen or blocked lock) - choose Door lock.
* HELD AT THE STOP / HOT: the power stays on after the stroke - use a pulse.
* The sketch says "NOT done": the rod did not reach the end - see the two
lines above; SL and SU must go to D4 / D5 and S to ground.
* The part is not simulated: TEPDOORLOCK.DLL is missing from MODELS and from
the project folder. No relay: install our Relay Module library (TEPRELAY.LIB
/ .DLL). No UNO / no monitor window: TEPARDUINO.DLL, or click the UNO's USB
port.
* The pop-up does not appear: click OPEN PANEL on the strip, or turn "Open the
panel at Run" on its Settings page back on.

LICENCES AND THIRD-PARTY NOTES
* The actuator model (TEPDOORLOCK.DLL), the symbol and artwork and the Arduino
Library V4.0 (ArduinoV4TEP.LIB / TEPARDUINO.DLL) are made by The Engineering
Projects. The model is an independent implementation written from the
typical data of 12 V car door lock actuators. The models use only standard
Windows libraries; no Visual C++ redistributable is needed.
The C++ source code is not included. The demo's relay module, our Relay
Module library (TEPRELAY.LIB / TEPRELAY.DLL), is a separate download.
* The demo's .hex is built from the demo sketch and the Arduino AVR core 1.8.6,
which includes LGPL-licensed code; its source code is available at
https://github.com/arduino/ArduinoCore-avr/tree/1.8.6
* Proteus is a product of Labcenter Electronics and is not included. Arduino is
a trademark of Arduino SA. This library is not made or endorsed by any car
or lock maker, Arduino or Labcenter.
REBUILDING THE FIRMWARE (OPTIONAL)
The HEX file is supplied; Arduino IDE is not needed to run the demo. To edit
the sketch, open Arduino Code\Lock_Demo\Lock_Demo.ino, select Arduino Uno and
use Sketch > Export Compiled Binary. The sketch needs 5,008 bytes of flash
(16 % of the UNO) and 269 bytes of RAM.
MODEL SCOPE AND LIMITS
Modelled: the motor (resistance with its temperature, inductance, back-EMF),
the gears and the rack (0.15 mm a radian, 35 % efficient), the end stops and
the stall, the door lock's friction and over-centre spring, a jammed lock, the
rod moved by hand, the position switch, the windings' heating, the watch's
states and warnings.
How it runs: the motor is in the circuit as a backward-Euler companion over
the analog step; the switch as two switched conductances; the mechanics and
the heat run in sub-steps of at most 50 us between the analog points, which
are held to 0.5 ms while it moves or carries current (5 ms at rest).
Not modelled: the car's lock module and its alarm, a vacuum (pneumatic) lock,
the rubber boot's drag, the clutch's own feel, the motor's wear.

FAQs9 questionsContact TEP
How do I download Car Door Lock Actuator Library for Proteus V1.0?
Wait for the 30-second guest countdown on this page, then press the download button; the file comes straight from our storage. Members who are logged in skip the wait. If the browser opens the file instead of saving it, use its Save as option. The download link is made for you when the countdown ends and works for 15 minutes; a saved or shared link stops working, so share this page instead.
What is inside the archive?
Car Door Lock Actuator Library for Proteus V1.0 comes as a ZIP archive of 10 files (1.2 MB, 2.5 MB unpacked) holding Proteus library files, simulation model DLLs, a Proteus simulation, an Arduino sketch and compiled HEX firmware. Open the File Structure tab for the full list of 10 files.
What should I do if the download does not start?
Check the browser's download list first; an ad blocker or a company firewall can also hold it back, so try another browser or network. If the file arrives incomplete, download it again. For an installation problem, read the Install tab or tell us in the comments with your software version and the exact error message.
Is this file free?
Yes. Every file in the TEP Download Center is free for learning, personal and student projects. If you share it, link back to this page or the tutorial so others find the latest version.
How do I check that the file arrived complete?
Compare its SHA-256 with the one on this page, ba2f6c5b32104757556dc435746023a3ee8d466f11e01493309ceace4dc9b0dc. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash "car-door-lock-actuator-tep-v1-0-e618e7feb2e74be49917e8f2b5a6bdfd.zip"; on macOS or Linux run shasum -a 256 "car-door-lock-actuator-tep-v1-0-e618e7feb2e74be49917e8f2b5a6bdfd.zip". The same value means the file is exactly the one in our storage; a different one means the download broke off, so download it again.
Do I need WinRAR to open the ZIP file?
No. Windows, macOS and Linux open ZIP archives on their own (Extract All, or double-click). WinRAR and 7-Zip work too. Extract the whole archive before using the files.
Where do I put the LIB and IDX files?
Both files go into the LIBRARY folder of your Proteus installation (Proteus 8: C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY; Proteus 7 has the same folder under its own name). Restart Proteus afterwards and search for the component with P.
Which Proteus version does the library need?
The tutorial names the Proteus version the library was made and tested with. Most TEP libraries work in Proteus 7 and Proteus 8; if the component does not appear after a restart, check that both the LIB and the IDX file were copied and that Proteus was fully closed while copying.
How do I get the HEX file into the simulation?
Compile the sketch in the Arduino IDE (Sketch → Export Compiled Binary gives you the HEX next to the sketch), then in Proteus double-click the board, set Program File to that HEX and run.
Members skip the wait. Log in or join TEP.
