WHAT IS IT?
Three incandescent bulbs, drawn at true scale from the side, base down, their two contacts as pins:
* W5W - 12 V 5 W, a T10 all-glass wedge bulb (10 mm glass): 50 lm, the side lights and number
plates of cars.
* P21W - 12 V 21 W on a BA15s base (26.5 mm glass, 52.5 mm long): 460 lm, the brake and indicator
lights.
* #47 - 6.3 V 0.15 A miniature on a BA9s base (T-3 1/4, 10 mm glass): the pilot lamp of panels and
old radios, 3000 hours.
* One analog model: a tungsten filament whose resistance follows its temperature (about 14 times
lower cold than hot), heated by its current
and cooled by radiation and its lead-in wires, with its heat capacity. So it draws a surge of 12
to 15 times its current at switch-on,
warms in tens of milliseconds, smooths PWM, glows in its temperature's colour on the sheet, and
follows the lamp laws: light ~ V^3.4,
life ~ V^-13. Over-run, it burns out.
* Click one at Run for the pop-up: the glowing bulb, the current of its last switch-on, graphs, an
event log and a check page.
The body is drawn as on the real part and to true scale against our Arduino.
The TEP signature and the pop-up are TEP additions.
THREE DEVICES (search "BULB", "W5W", "P21W" or "#47" in Pick Devices):
BULBW5WTEP "W5W 12V 5W Bulb V1.0" in TEPBULB.LIB (Optoelectronics > Lamps), prefix L, model
TEPBULB.DLL. Pins 1, 2 (no polarity).
BULBP21WTEP "P21W 12V 21W Bulb V1.0" in TEPBULB.LIB, prefix L, model TEPBULB.DLL. Pins 1, 2.
BULB47TEP "#47 6.3V 0.15A Bulb V1.0" in TEPBULB.LIB, prefix L, model TEPBULB.DLL. Pins 1, 2.
THE POP-UP
Click the part at Run. Tabs:
Bulb the bulb with its filament glowing at its temperature, the current of its last
switch-on (400 ms, with its peak and where it
settled, and when the light reached 90 %), and eight live values: voltage, current,
power, resistance (and cold), the filament's
temperature, the light in lumens, the surge, the life against rated. While PWM drives
it the values are averages.
The toolbar: New bulb, its rating and resistances.
Graphs the live values over the last 2, 6 or 15 s. Live / Freeze.
Event log every change and warning; filters All / Changes / Warnings, Pause, Clear
Check what the part is doing and what to look at, each with a verdict (green = fine, amber
= check, red = wrong)

TEST STATUS
V1.0: verified in Proteus 8.5 on 31 Oct 2026 (the demo project as shipped: an A4 sheet, an Arduino UNO V4.0).
What the runs showed (the model's own numbers and the sketch's monitor):
* The project loads and starts cleanly. Before the runs, the filament was checked in a separate
solver against the lamp laws: at 80 % of
its voltage a bulb gives 47 % of its light (0.8^3.4), 0.88 of its current (0.8^0.55) and 17
times its life (0.8^-13).
* L1 (W5W, switched hard by an IRLZ44N): a switch-on surge of 5.75 A, 13.8 x the 0.417 A it
settles at; full light after 116 ms;
then 11.99 V, 4.99 W, 2699 K, 50 lm. Cold 2.06 ohm, hot 28.8 ohm.
* L2 (W5W, PWM soft start over 300 ms): the cold filament still saw pulses of 5.75 A, but their 4
ms average never passed 0.61 A,
1.5 x the running current; full light after 280 ms. Dimmed to 40 % (490 Hz): 2210 K and 9 lm -
18 % of its light from 40 % of the time.
* L3 (P21W, switched hard): a surge of 24.8 A, 14.2 x its 1.75 A; full light after 228 ms; 20.9 W,
2846 K, 455 lm. Switched off, it was
still at 1986 K and 20 lm moments later; switched on again from 911 K, its surge was only 6.79 A
(3.9 x).
* L4 (#47 on the 5 V rail through a 2N2222A): 4.92 V, 133 mA, 2206 K, 2.5 lm - 40 % of its light
for about 32 times its life. Its surge was
held near 378 mA (2.8 x) by the transistor, whose 1k base resistor gives it no more.
* The pop-up: Bulb (the glowing bulb, the last switch-on's current), Graphs, Event log, Check -
all four pages followed the run, for all four
bulbs; the monitor printed every step.
INSTALLATION (about 2 minutes)
1. Close Proteus. Extract the WHOLE ZIP to a normal folder (e.g. Desktop).
2. Copy everything in "Proteus Library Files" (TEPBULB.LIB, TEPRESISTOR.LIB, TEPNMOS.LIB, TEPBJT.LIB
and our Arduino library V4.0, ArduinoV4TEP.LIB, with the ARDUINO UNO V4.0 used by the demo) to the
LIBRARY folder of Proteus, for example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY
(use the folder that already holds Proteus's own .LIB files).
3. Copy TEPBULB.DLL, TEPRESISTOR.DLL, TEPNMOS.DLL, TEPBJT.DLL and TEPARDUINO.DLL from "Proteus Model
Files" to the MODELS folder (...\Proteus 8 Professional\MODELS).
4. Delete TEPBULB.IDX from the LIBRARY folder if it is there (Proteus makes a new index).
5. Start Proteus. In Pick Devices (P) search "BULB, W5W, P21W or #47".
RUN THE DEMO
"Proteus Simulation\Filament-Bulbs-ArduinoUnoV4.pdsprj" (an A4 sheet) - keep the .hex file and the
DLLs beside the project.
ARD1: Arduino UNO V4.0 running Bulb_Demo.hex, its serial monitor built in (window "TEP Arduino
UNO - ARD1").
L1 W5W: +12V - L1 - Q1 IRLZ44N (D9 - R1 220 - gate) switched hard
L2 W5W: +12V - L2 - Q2 IRLZ44N (D10 - R2 220 - gate) PWM soft start, then dimmed
L3 P21W: +12V - L3 - Q3 IRLZ44N (D11 - R3 220 - gate) switched hard
L4 #47: +5V - L4 - Q4 2N2222A (D8 - R4 1k - base) run under its voltage
1. Press Run. Every 4 s: all on (L2 soft-started over 300 ms) for 2 s / L2 dimmed to 40 % for 1 s
/ all off for 1 s.
2. Open L1's and L2's pop-ups: the same bulb, a 13.8 x surge against a gentle 1.5 x.
Closed the monitor? Click the UNO's USB port.
WIRING (the same in Proteus and on a real board)
+V - bulb - drain of an N-MOSFET (or collector of an NPN); source / emitter to GND; pin - 220 ohm
- gate
size the switch for the surge, 12 to 15 x the running current, or soft-start it with PWM
REAL HARDWARE:
* A cold filament has about a fourteenth of its hot resistance: plan for the surge.
* The lamp laws: 5 % under its voltage, a bulb lives about twice as long and gives about 16 % less
light; 5 % over, half the life.
* PWM at a few hundred hertz dims a bulb without visible flicker: the filament's heat smooths it -
but light falls much faster than duty.
* A small transistor with too little base current limits the surge, and heats while it does.
THE DEMO SKETCH ON THE SERIAL MONITOR (Bulb_Demo V1.0, 9600 baud)
There are no commands. The sketch runs its 4 s cycle and prints each step.
EXPECTED MONITOR OUTPUT
Filament bulbs - The Engineering Projects
Step 1: all on - L1 and L3 switched hard, L2 soft-started
Step 2: L2 dimmed to 40 %
PROPERTIES (double-click the part > Edit Properties)
Part (VALUE) W5W 12V 5W, P21W 12V 21W or #47 6.3V 0.15A (the label; the device
sets the bulb)
Every run starts again from the properties.
LINKS.INI (OPTIONAL)
The Help page cards of the pop-up open web pages. To point them somewhere else without a new DLL,
put a text file named links.ini next to TEPBULB.DLL with lines KEY=URL, for example:
ARTICLE=https://www.theengineeringprojects.com/...
Keys: WEBSITE, FORUM, BUG_REPORT, FEATURE_REQUEST, ARTICLE, USER_GUIDE,
UPDATE_CHECK, DONATE. Only http:// and https:// links are used; lines starting
with # are comments.
TROUBLESHOOTING
* No light: the switch is not on, or the bulb has burnt out - its pop-up says BURNT OUT; New bulb
fits another.
* The switch overheats at each switch-on: the surge - a bigger switch, or a PWM soft start.
* Dim and long-lived: the bulb is under-run - check the supply against its rating.
* BURNT OUT: it was over-run - keep it at or under its voltage.
* The part is not simulated: TEPBULB.DLL is missing from MODELS and from the project folder. No UNO
/ no monitor window: TEPARDUINO.DLL is missing, or click the UNO's USB port.

LICENCES AND THIRD-PARTY NOTES
* The model (TEPBULB.DLL), the symbols and artwork, the other parts of ours in the demo and the
Arduino Library V4.0 (ArduinoV4TEP.LIB / TEPARDUINO.DLL, with its built-in TEP Serial Monitor
Advance) are made by The Engineering Projects. The models use only standard Windows libraries; no
Visual C++ redistributable is needed.
The C++ source code is not included.
* Arduino UNO V4.0 (ArduinoV4TEP.LIB / TEPARDUINO.DLL, our Arduino Library V4.0 - its
microcontroller is Proteus's own AVR model): The Engineering Projects,
https://www.theengineeringprojects.com/2026/10/arduino-uno-library-for-proteus-v40.html
* The .hex file is built from the demo sketch and the Arduino AVR core 1.8.6, which includes
LGPL-licensed code; its source code is available at
https://github.com/arduino/ArduinoCore-avr/tree/1.8.6
* Proteus is a product of Labcenter Electronics and is not included. Arduino is a trademark of Arduino SA.
This library is not made or endorsed by Arduino or Labcenter.
REBUILDING THE FIRMWARE (OPTIONAL)
The HEX file is supplied; Arduino IDE is not needed to run the demo. To edit the sketch, open
Arduino Code\Bulb_Demo\Bulb_Demo.ino, select Arduino Uno and use Sketch > Export Compiled Binary.
Replace the simulation's .hex with the exported HEX. The sketch needs 3,358 bytes of flash and 205
bytes of RAM.
MODEL SCOPE AND LIMITS
Modelled: tungsten's resistance against temperature, radiation and conduction losses, the heat
capacity (the surge, the warm-up, the cooling,
PWM smoothing), the light and the life by the lamp laws, the burn-out.
Not modelled: the colour of the light beyond the glow, the filament's slow thinning with age, the
gas inside the bulb. The warm-up times come
from typical bulbs, not a datasheet figure.

FAQs9 questionsContact TEP
How do I download Filament Bulb Library for Proteus V1.0?
Wait for the 30-second guest countdown on this page, then press the download button; the file comes straight from our storage. Members who are logged in skip the wait. If the browser opens the file instead of saving it, use its Save as option. The download link is made for you when the countdown ends and works for 15 minutes; a saved or shared link stops working, so share this page instead.
What is inside the archive?
Filament Bulb Library for Proteus V1.0 comes as a ZIP archive of 19 files (2.1 MB, 4.6 MB unpacked) holding Proteus library files, simulation model DLLs, a Proteus simulation, an Arduino sketch and compiled HEX firmware. Open the File Structure tab for the full list of 19 files.
What should I do if the download does not start?
Check the browser's download list first; an ad blocker or a company firewall can also hold it back, so try another browser or network. If the file arrives incomplete, download it again. For an installation problem, read the Install tab or tell us in the comments with your software version and the exact error message.
Is this file free?
Yes. Every file in the TEP Download Center is free for learning, personal and student projects. If you share it, link back to this page or the tutorial so others find the latest version.
How do I check that the file arrived complete?
Compare its SHA-256 with the one on this page, 113712c48f596f94495421104701a471275e7c66404578cdecb013690d89d02b. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash "filament-bulb-tep-v1-0-6e8e200dd6bc45da978a7e95c9a486ae.zip"; on macOS or Linux run shasum -a 256 "filament-bulb-tep-v1-0-6e8e200dd6bc45da978a7e95c9a486ae.zip". The same value means the file is exactly the one in our storage; a different one means the download broke off, so download it again.
Do I need WinRAR to open the ZIP file?
No. Windows, macOS and Linux open ZIP archives on their own (Extract All, or double-click). WinRAR and 7-Zip work too. Extract the whole archive before using the files.
Where do I put the LIB and IDX files?
Both files go into the LIBRARY folder of your Proteus installation (Proteus 8: C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY; Proteus 7 has the same folder under its own name). Restart Proteus afterwards and search for the component with P.
Which Proteus version does the library need?
The tutorial names the Proteus version the library was made and tested with. Most TEP libraries work in Proteus 7 and Proteus 8; if the component does not appear after a restart, check that both the LIB and the IDX file were copied and that Proteus was fully closed while copying.
How do I get the HEX file into the simulation?
Compile the sketch in the Arduino IDE (Sketch → Export Compiled Binary gives you the HEX next to the sketch), then in Proteus double-click the board, set Program File to that HEX and run.
Members skip the wait. Log in or join TEP.
