WHAT IS IT?
DIP switches, drawn at true scale and seen from the top: a red body with white sliders, ON up, the
numbers printed under them. Two sizes:
* 8-way (CTS 206-8 style): 22.5 mm long; 4-way: 12.2 mm long. Rows 7.62 mm apart, pins on 2.54 mm.
* Switch k joins pin k (the bottom row, 1 .. N from the left) to the pin facing it in the top row
(2N+1-k).
* At Run, click a slider to flip it. Every combination is a ready-drawn state, so the sliders show
while stopped and stay after Stop.
* Each contact: 50 milliohm closed, rated 50 mA at 24 V; past the rating it warns.
* The small dot opens the pop-up: the switch, every contact's current, the value in binary,
decimal and hex, graphs, an event log and a check
page. Its chips flip each switch, set them all, invert them, or count up in binary.
The body is drawn as on the real part and to true scale against our Arduino.
The TEP signature and the pop-up are TEP additions.
TWO DEVICES (search "DIPSWITCH" in Pick Devices):
DIPSWITCH8TEP "DIP Switch 8-way V1.0" in TEPDIP.LIB (Switches and Relays > Switches), prefix SW,
model TEPDIP.DLL. Pins 1 .. 16.
DIPSWITCH4TEP "DIP Switch 4-way V1.0" in TEPDIP.LIB (Switches and Relays > Switches), prefix SW,
model TEPDIP.DLL. Pins 1 .. 8.
THE POP-UP
Click the small dot on the part at Run (a click on a slider flips it). Tabs:
Switches N of N ON with the value in binary, decimal and hex, the switch drawn large, every
contact's current (or the voltage across it when
open), and eight live values. The toolbar: 1 .. 8 (flip one), All on, All off,
Invert, Count.
Graphs the live values over the last 2, 6 or 15 s. Live / Freeze.
Event log every change and warning; filters All / Changes / Warnings, Pause, Clear
Check what the part is doing and what to look at, each with a verdict (green = fine, amber
= check, red = wrong)

TEST STATUS
V1.0: verified in Proteus 8.5 on 31 Oct 2026 (the demo project as shipped: an A4 sheet, an Arduino UNO V4.0).
What the runs showed (the model's own numbers and the sketch's monitor):
* The project loads and starts cleanly; the sliders start where the sheet shows them: SW1 00101101
= 45, SW2 0101 = 5. The monitor printed both.
* Each closed switch of SW1 carried 0.5 mA through its RN1 pull-up (10k from 5 V); SW2's carried
50 uA each through the UNO's own pull-ups.
* The pop-up's chips turned switch 8 and then switch 2 on: 173 (0xAD), then 175 (0xAF), six
contacts closed, 3.00 mA in all; the sheet's sliders followed.
* Count on SW2 ran it up through 0 .. 15 in binary, one step every 0.5 s; the Graphs page drew the
staircase.
* Real (guarded) mouse clicks: a click on switch 5's slider flipped it on (45 became 61); a click
on the small dot opened the pop-up.
* The pop-up: Switches, Graphs, Event log, Check - all four pages followed the run.
INSTALLATION (about 2 minutes)
1. Close Proteus. Extract the WHOLE ZIP to a normal folder (e.g. Desktop).
2. Copy everything in "Proteus Library Files" (TEPDIP.LIB, TEPRESNET.LIB and our Arduino library
V4.0, ArduinoV4TEP.LIB, with the ARDUINO UNO V4.0 used by the demo) to the LIBRARY folder of
Proteus, for example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY
(use the folder that already holds Proteus's own .LIB files).
3. Copy TEPDIP.DLL, TEPRESNET.DLL and TEPARDUINO.DLL from "Proteus Model Files" to the MODELS folder
(...\Proteus 8 Professional\MODELS).
4. Delete TEPDIP.IDX from the LIBRARY folder if it is there (Proteus makes a new index).
5. Start Proteus. In Pick Devices (P) search "DIPSWITCH".
RUN THE DEMO
"Proteus Simulation\DIP-Switch-Reader-ArduinoUnoV4.pdsprj" (an A4 sheet) - keep the .hex file and
the DLLs beside the project.
ARD1: Arduino UNO V4.0 running DIP_Reader_Demo.hex, its serial monitor built in (window "TEP
Arduino UNO - ARD1").
SW1: an 8-way DIP switch, sliders 00101101: the bottom row to GND, the top row to D2 .. D9
(switch 1 on D2).
RN1: our SIP-9 resistor network, A103J: pin 1 to +5V, pins 2 .. 9 to D2 .. D9 - eight 10k
pull-ups in one part.
SW2: a 4-way DIP switch, sliders 0101: the bottom row to GND, the top row to A0 .. A3, with the
UNO's own pull-ups.
1. Press Run. The monitor prints SW1 as 45 (0x2D) and SW2 as mode 5.
2. Click a slider, or the dot and a numbered chip: the new value is printed at once.
Closed the monitor? Click the UNO's USB port.
WIRING (the same in Proteus and on a real board)
one side of each switch - GND ; the other side - an input with a pull-up : ON reads LOW (a 1 in
the sketch)
a resistor network's common - +5V ; its pins - the inputs : eight pull-ups in one part
REAL HARDWARE:
* ON is the side printed ON. Check which row is which on the datasheet before you lay out a board.
* A DIP switch is made for setting, not for daily switching: a few thousand moves.
* Keep the current small: 50 mA at the most, and much less with pull-ups (0.5 mA with 10k).
* Most designs read it once, at power-up: an address, a mode, an option.
THE DEMO SKETCH ON THE SERIAL MONITOR (DIP_Reader_Demo V1.0, 9600 baud)
There are no commands. The sketch reads both switches and prints a line when either changes.
EXPECTED MONITOR OUTPUT
DIP switch reader - The Engineering Projects
SW1 00101101 = 45 (0x2D), SW2 0101 = mode 5
SW1 10101101 = 173 (0xAD), SW2 0101 = mode 5
PROPERTIES (double-click the part > Edit Properties)
Contact resistance, ohm 0.05
Contact rating, mA 50
Sliders while stopped (bit k-1 = switch k ON) 0 .. 255 (8-way) or 0 .. 15 (4-way): set by
clicking at Run
Every run starts again from the properties.
LINKS.INI (OPTIONAL)
The Help page cards of the pop-up open web pages. To point them somewhere else without a new DLL,
put a text file named links.ini next to TEPDIP.DLL with lines KEY=URL, for example:
ARTICLE=https://www.theengineeringprojects.com/...
Keys: WEBSITE, FORUM, BUG_REPORT, FEATURE_REQUEST, ARTICLE, USER_GUIDE,
UPDATE_CHECK, DONATE. Only http:// and https:// links are used; lines starting
with # are comments.
TROUBLESHOOTING
* A switch reads backwards: with pull-ups, ON pulls the input LOW. Read a LOW as a 1.
* Every input reads 1 with all switches off: the pull-ups are missing (no network, and no
INPUT_PULLUP).
* A click does nothing: the simulation is not running, or the click missed the slider; the rest of
the body opens the pop-up.
* The pop-up warns OVERLOAD: more than 50 mA through one contact. Add a resistor.
* The part is not simulated: TEPDIP.DLL is missing from MODELS and from the project folder. No UNO /
no monitor window: TEPARDUINO.DLL is missing, or click the UNO's USB port.

LICENCES AND THIRD-PARTY NOTES
* The model (TEPDIP.DLL), the symbols and artwork, the other parts of ours in the demo and the
Arduino Library V4.0 (ArduinoV4TEP.LIB / TEPARDUINO.DLL, with its built-in TEP Serial Monitor
Advance) are made by The Engineering Projects. The models use only standard Windows libraries; no
Visual C++ redistributable is needed.
The C++ source code is not included.
* Arduino UNO V4.0 (ArduinoV4TEP.LIB / TEPARDUINO.DLL, our Arduino Library V4.0 - its
microcontroller is Proteus's own AVR model): The Engineering Projects,
https://www.theengineeringprojects.com/2026/10/arduino-uno-library-for-proteus-v40.html
* The .hex file is built from the demo sketch and the Arduino AVR core 1.8.6, which includes
LGPL-licensed code; its source code is available at
https://github.com/arduino/ArduinoCore-avr/tree/1.8.6
* Proteus is a product of Labcenter Electronics and is not included. Arduino is a trademark of Arduino SA.
This library is not made or endorsed by Arduino or Labcenter.
REBUILDING THE FIRMWARE (OPTIONAL)
The HEX file is supplied; Arduino IDE is not needed to run the demo. To edit the sketch, open
Arduino Code\DIP_Reader_Demo\DIP_Reader_Demo.ino, select Arduino Uno and use Sketch > Export
Compiled Binary. Replace the simulation's .hex with the exported HEX. The sketch needs 3,886 bytes
of flash and 207 bytes of RAM.
MODEL SCOPE AND LIMITS
Modelled: every contact (closed resistance, open), the current through each, the rating, the sliders
kept after Stop.
Not modelled: contact bounce, wear, the slide force.

FAQs9 questionsContact TEP
How do I download DIP Switch Library for Proteus V1.0?
Wait for the 30-second guest countdown on this page, then press the download button; the file comes straight from our storage. Members who are logged in skip the wait. If the browser opens the file instead of saving it, use its Save as option. The download link is made for you when the countdown ends and works for 15 minutes; a saved or shared link stops working, so share this page instead.
What is inside the archive?
DIP Switch Library for Proteus V1.0 comes as a ZIP archive of 13 files (1.5 MB, 5.1 MB unpacked) holding Proteus library files, simulation model DLLs, a Proteus simulation, an Arduino sketch and compiled HEX firmware. Open the File Structure tab for the full list of 13 files.
What should I do if the download does not start?
Check the browser's download list first; an ad blocker or a company firewall can also hold it back, so try another browser or network. If the file arrives incomplete, download it again. For an installation problem, read the Install tab or tell us in the comments with your software version and the exact error message.
Is this file free?
Yes. Every file in the TEP Download Center is free for learning, personal and student projects. If you share it, link back to this page or the tutorial so others find the latest version.
How do I check that the file arrived complete?
Compare its SHA-256 with the one on this page, 7035f16ac5ac062786b42ac2101d380b4ff94e1deb47e39704f060f5d422a703. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash "dip-switch-tep-v1-0-1426ed95d30b4daf902a11bb69932921.zip"; on macOS or Linux run shasum -a 256 "dip-switch-tep-v1-0-1426ed95d30b4daf902a11bb69932921.zip". The same value means the file is exactly the one in our storage; a different one means the download broke off, so download it again.
Do I need WinRAR to open the ZIP file?
No. Windows, macOS and Linux open ZIP archives on their own (Extract All, or double-click). WinRAR and 7-Zip work too. Extract the whole archive before using the files.
Where do I put the LIB and IDX files?
Both files go into the LIBRARY folder of your Proteus installation (Proteus 8: C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY; Proteus 7 has the same folder under its own name). Restart Proteus afterwards and search for the component with P.
Which Proteus version does the library need?
The tutorial names the Proteus version the library was made and tested with. Most TEP libraries work in Proteus 7 and Proteus 8; if the component does not appear after a restart, check that both the LIB and the IDX file were copied and that Proteus was fully closed while copying.
How do I get the HEX file into the simulation?
Compile the sketch in the Arduino IDE (Sketch → Export Compiled Binary gives you the HEX next to the sketch), then in Proteus double-click the board, set Program File to that HEX and run.
Members skip the wait. Log in or join TEP.
