WHAT IS IT?
A simulation model of the TB6600 stepper motor driver module - the black 4 A
box with a heat sink (a TB6600HG chip inside) that drives the NEMA 23 and the
big NEMA 17 motors of CNC routers, laser cutters and 3D printers. Our own
model:
* A bipolar stepper on A+ A- and B+ B-, 9 - 42 V DC on VCC / GND.
* Optocoupled inputs PUL, DIR and ENA, each a + and a - terminal: an input
is ON when its + pin is HIGH and its - pin LOW. Common cathode (the -
pins on GND, the Arduino on the + pins) or common anode (the + pins on
5V, the Arduino on the - pins) - the model finds the wiring by itself.
* A step on every PUL pulse; DIR sets the direction; ENA ON switches the
outputs off (the shaft is free - the pulses still count, as on the
real module).
* The DIP switches: SW1 - SW3 the microsteps (full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16,
1/32), SW4 - SW6 the current (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 2.8, 3.0 or 3.5 A;
0.7 - 4.0 A peak). Properties MICROSTEP and CURRENT, or the pop-up's chips
while it runs.
* A current chopper: each coil is driven toward its target current (the
cosine and sine of the microstep angle times the peak) as fast as the
supply allows - the coil current rises at about VCC / L and a fast motor's
back-EMF takes it away, like the real one. Our NEMA 23 Stepper Motor (the
demo) is the matching motor; any analog coil load is driven the same way.
* What it tells: the steps counted, the step rate and the RPM for a
200-step motor, the direction, the electrical angle, the coil currents,
the supply current, the wiring, the shortest PUL pulse (it needs 2.5 us),
the DIR set-up time (5 us before PUL), pulses while disabled, and the
warnings - VCC under 9 V or over 42 V, short pulses, DIR too late, both
pins of an input switching.
The symbol shows the module from above: the black aluminium housing with its
cooling grooves and four mounting holes, the white label, the red six-way DIP
switch with its two tables, the green terminal blocks - the signal block on the
left (PUL+ PUL- DIR+ DIR- ENA+ ENA-) and the power block on the right (VCC GND
B- B+ A+ A-). At Run the DIP sliders show the settings. The plate, the PWR
(green), PUL (yellow) and OFF (red: ENA ON) LEDs and the strip under the plate
(STEPS/S, the setting, VCC and OPEN PANEL) are TEP additions; the real module
has none of them.
ONE DEVICE (search "TB6600" in Pick Devices):

The pop-up panel "TEP TB6600 Stepper Driver" opens at Run (and with OPEN PANEL
on the strip) - the look of the TEP Serial Monitor. Tabs Driver,
Graphs, Event log and Check; gear and ? icons for Settings and Help; the
palette icon switches the theme:
Driver the state in big letters (RUNNING 3203 STEPS/S - 120 RPM AT 1/8

values (state, step rate, steps counted, microstep, current
setting, coil A / B, VCC, supply current); the DIP switches
with both tables. The toolbar: Microstep chips (1 - 32) and
the current chips (0.5 - 3.5 A) - the DIP switches.
Graphs the step rate, the coil currents and the supply current over
the last 0.5, 5 or 30 s. Live / Freeze.

TEST STATUS
V1.0: verified in Proteus 8.5 on 29 Oct 2026 (the demo project as shipped: an
A3 sheet, an Arduino UNO V4.0 with its built-in monitor, the TB6600 on a +24V
supply, our NEMA 23 - from its own library - on its outputs, RV1 on A0 at
40 %; all pop-ups open). What the runs showed:
* The project loads and starts cleanly: "POWER ON - VCC 24.0 V", "MICROSTEP
1/8 - SW1 SW2 SW3 = OFF ON OFF", "CURRENT 2.8 A (2.9 A peak) - SW4 SW5
SW6 = OFF OFF ON"; PUL, DIR and ENA found wired common cathode. RV1 at
40 %: "Pot 410 -> target 640 steps (1/8) = 144.0 deg"; HOLDING at 640
steps with 2.05 A in each coil (2.9 A peak at 45 deg), 0.55 A from VCC.
* "a 90", then "rpm 120" + "s 400": RUNNING at about 3200 pulses/s = 120 RPM
at 1/8, the coil vector turning, 0.67 A from the 24 V supply; the NEMA 23
at 810.0 deg.
* "rpm 300" + "s -400": the move "peaked at 3907 steps/s (146 RPM)" - the
ramp is too short to reach 300 RPM; back at 90.0 deg, nothing lost.
* "release": DISABLED - ENA ON, 0 A in the coils, 0.03 A from VCC; the OFF
LED lit. "hold": HOLDING again.
* The pop-up's 1/16 chip: "MICROSTEP 1/16 - SW1 SW2 SW3 = OFF OFF ON: 3200
steps a turn"; "s 200" (1600 pulses) turns the motor half a turn - the
sketch still counts 1/8.
* Back to 1/8, the motor's brake (150 N.cm) + "s 200": the TB6600 runs
1600 pulses as always; the motor loses 200 full steps - a driver never
knows.
* The Check page: the shortest PUL pulse 10.69 us HIGH (at least 2.5 us),
DIR settled at least 5 us before the PUL edges, the top rate 3907
steps/s.
Plus automatic checks on a PC, 0 failed: 24 on the driver (1/8 and 2.8 A
from the DIP switches = 2.9 A peak; power on at 24 V; home at 45 deg =
2.05 A a coil; 1600 pulses at 1/8 = a turn; 1000 pulses/s = 37.5 RPM;
common cathode and common anode found; DIR back 3 steps; ENA ON = no
current, pulses still counted; a 1 us pulse and a 2 us DIR set-up warned;
full step = both coils at the peak; 6400 pulses at 1/32 = a turn; 7.5 V =
off, 45 V warned; the log stays short); 5 on the pop-up pages rendered; the
demo project read back from disk (90 checks: devices, pins, wires, labels,
no wire through a part, no crossing).
INSTALLATION (about 2 minutes)
1. Close Proteus. Extract the WHOLE ZIP to a normal folder (e.g. Desktop).
2. Copy everything in "Proteus Library Files" (TEPTB6600.LIB and our Arduino
library V4.0, ArduinoV4TEP.LIB) to the LIBRARY folder of Proteus, for
example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY
(on some PCs: C:\ProgramData\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\
LIBRARY - use the folder that already holds Proteus's own .LIB files).
3. Copy TEPTB6600.DLL and TEPARDUINO.DLL from "Proteus Model Files" to the
MODELS folder (...\Proteus 8 Professional\MODELS). The demo's motor is NOT
in this package: install our NEMA 23 Stepper Motor library the same way (its
own ZIP - see IMPORTANT LINKS): TEPNEMA23.LIB and TEPNEMA23.DLL.
4. Delete TEPTB6600.IDX from the LIBRARY folder if it is there.
5. Start Proteus. In Pick Devices (P) search "TB6600".
RUN THE DEMO
"Proteus Simulation\TB6600-Stepper-Driver-NEMA23-ArduinoUnoV4.pdsprj" - keep the
.hex file and the DLLs beside the project (with the NEMA 23 library installed).
ARD1: Arduino UNO V4.0 running NEMA23_TB6600_Demo.hex, its serial monitor
built in (window "TEP Arduino UNO - ARD1").
DRV1: the TB6600, common cathode: PUL+ D3, DIR+ D4, ENA+ D8, PUL- DIR- ENA-
on GND, VCC on a +24V supply - by net labels; MICROSTEP 8, CURRENT 2.8.
M1: our NEMA 23 (its own library) on A+ A- B+ B-.
RV1: a 10k potentiometer on A0: the motor's dial follows it (0 - 360 deg).
1. Press Run. The monitor and the two pop-ups open (move them aside). The
motor ramps to the pot's angle and holds.
2. Click RV1's arrows: the motor follows.
3. Type in the monitor and press Send: a 90, s 200, rpm 120, release, hold,
knob.
4. On the TB6600's pop-up: the Microstep chips - the same pulses turn the
motor less at 1/16, more at 1/4; the current chips set its peak.
5. The driver's pop-up: Driver, Graphs, Event log, Check.

REAL HARDWARE:
* Set the current (SW4 - SW6) to the motor's rated current and the
microsteps (SW1 - SW3) to the sketch's value - with the power off.
* Never connect or disconnect the motor while VCC is on - it destroys the
driver.
* Feed it from a supply that gives the motor's current at speed (24 V,
a few amps for a NEMA 23); the module gets warm: keep the heat sink free.
* The inputs want 5 V signals (3.3 V boards may need a buffer or a 3.3 V
compatible module).

TROUBLESHOOTING
* NO POWER: VCC under 9 V (the module switches on from 8.5 V) or not wired.
* HOLDING but the motor never moves: no PUL pulses arrive - the Check page
shows the wiring (PUL- on GND for common cathode) and the steps counted.
* DISABLED: ENA is ON (ENA+ HIGH in common cathode) - take it LOW or leave ENA
unconnected.
* It turns half or twice the angle: the sketch's microsteps and the DIP
switches (MICROSTEP) differ.
* Warnings on the Check page: PUL pulses under 2.5 us or DIR changing less
than 5 us before a pulse - make the pulses longer, wait after DIR.
* The part is not simulated: TEPTB6600.DLL is missing from MODELS and from
the project folder. No motor: install our NEMA 23 library (TEPNEMA23.LIB /
.DLL). No UNO / no monitor window: TEPARDUINO.DLL, or click the UNO's USB
port.
* The pop-up does not appear: click OPEN PANEL on the strip, or turn "Open the
panel at Run" on its Settings page back on.

LICENCES AND THIRD-PARTY NOTES
* The driver model (TEPTB6600.DLL), the symbol and artwork and the Arduino
Library V4.0 (ArduinoV4TEP.LIB / TEPARDUINO.DLL) are made by The Engineering
Projects. The model is an independent implementation written from the
typical data of TB6600 driver modules. The models use only standard Windows
libraries; no Visual C++ redistributable is needed.
The C++ source code is not included.
The demo's motor, our NEMA 23 Stepper Motor library (TEPNEMA23.LIB /
TEPNEMA23.DLL), is a separate download.
* The potentiometer is Proteus's own POT-HG.
* The demo's .hex is built from the demo sketch and the Arduino AVR core 1.8.6,
which includes LGPL-licensed code; its source code is available at
https://github.com/arduino/ArduinoCore-avr/tree/1.8.6
* Proteus is a product of Labcenter Electronics and is not included. Arduino is
a trademark of Arduino SA. This library is not made or endorsed by Toshiba,
any module maker, Arduino or Labcenter.
REBUILDING THE FIRMWARE (OPTIONAL)
The HEX file is supplied; Arduino IDE is not needed to run the demo. To edit the
sketch, open Arduino Code\NEMA23_TB6600_Demo\NEMA23_TB6600_Demo.ino, select
Arduino Uno and use Sketch > Export Compiled Binary. The sketch needs 9,012
bytes of flash (28 % of the UNO) and 303 bytes of RAM.
MODEL SCOPE AND LIMITS
Modelled: the optocoupled inputs (either wiring) with their timing, the
translator (full to 1/32 microsteps, the direction, enable), the current
setting, a chopper that drives each coil toward its sine / cosine target
with the supply's voltage as its limit, the supply's range and the supply
current (the coils' power plus the bridge losses and the module's own 0.03 A).
How it runs: the inputs are digital (DSIM) pins; VCC, GND and the outputs are
analog: each output sits at VCC / 2 through 20 kohm with diodes to VCC and GND,
and each coil pair is a current source of the target behind 1 kohm - clamped by
the diodes, so the coil current rises at about VCC / L and a moving motor's
back-EMF takes it away.
Not modelled: the chopper's switching ripple (the averaged current is used),
the decay modes, heat and its over-temperature cut-off, the module's real
input current limits.

FAQs9 questionsContact TEP
How do I download TB6600 Stepper Motor Driver Library for Proteus V1.0?
Wait for the 30-second guest countdown on this page, then press the download button; the file comes straight from our storage. Members who are logged in skip the wait. If the browser opens the file instead of saving it, use its Save as option. The download link is made for you when the countdown ends and works for 15 minutes; a saved or shared link stops working, so share this page instead.
What is inside the archive?
TB6600 Stepper Motor Driver Library for Proteus V1.0 comes as a ZIP archive of 10 files (1.2 MB, 2.6 MB unpacked) holding Proteus library files, simulation model DLLs, a Proteus simulation, an Arduino sketch and compiled HEX firmware. Open the File Structure tab for the full list of 10 files.
What should I do if the download does not start?
Check the browser's download list first; an ad blocker or a company firewall can also hold it back, so try another browser or network. If the file arrives incomplete, download it again. For an installation problem, read the Install tab or tell us in the comments with your software version and the exact error message.
Is this file free?
Yes. Every file in the TEP Download Center is free for learning, personal and student projects. If you share it, link back to this page or the tutorial so others find the latest version.
How do I check that the file arrived complete?
Compare its SHA-256 with the one on this page, ddeee24caeffd132779da385fbf0cd7b4086714b46f49318435dce33ee2b0c16. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash "tb6600-stepper-driver-tep-v1-0-800c01e8a296429e92fabbd53fe2f1e6.zip"; on macOS or Linux run shasum -a 256 "tb6600-stepper-driver-tep-v1-0-800c01e8a296429e92fabbd53fe2f1e6.zip". The same value means the file is exactly the one in our storage; a different one means the download broke off, so download it again.
Do I need WinRAR to open the ZIP file?
No. Windows, macOS and Linux open ZIP archives on their own (Extract All, or double-click). WinRAR and 7-Zip work too. Extract the whole archive before using the files.
Where do I put the LIB and IDX files?
Both files go into the LIBRARY folder of your Proteus installation (Proteus 8: C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY; Proteus 7 has the same folder under its own name). Restart Proteus afterwards and search for the component with P.
Which Proteus version does the library need?
The tutorial names the Proteus version the library was made and tested with. Most TEP libraries work in Proteus 7 and Proteus 8; if the component does not appear after a restart, check that both the LIB and the IDX file were copied and that Proteus was fully closed while copying.
How do I get the HEX file into the simulation?
Compile the sketch in the Arduino IDE (Sketch → Export Compiled Binary gives you the HEX next to the sketch), then in Proteus double-click the board, set Program File to that HEX and run.
Members skip the wait. Log in or join TEP.
