WHAT IS IT?
Proteus 8 has no Microchip ATmega32U4 model with its USB, so this is NOT a real ATmega32U4. It is the Arduino Leonardo -
the UNO's 68.6 x 53.4 mm board and headers with the ATmega32U4 (USB on the chip itself), micro-USB, the DC jack, RESET,
the ICSP header and the L, TX, RX and ON LEDs - that runs YOUR Leonardo sketch in Proteus:
* You write a normal Leonardo sketch (D0 .. D13, A0 .. A5, LED_BUILTIN, Serial, Serial1, Wire, EEPROM, analogRead
0 .. 1023, analogWrite, attachInterrupt, Keyboard, Mouse ...) and compile it in the Arduino IDE with our board
package "TEP Boards for Proteus" 1.34.0 (in Arduino Code - see INSTALLATION).
* Inside the board, Proteus's own ATmega2560 model runs the compiled sketch at 16 MHz; our model (TEPNET.DLL) wraps
it: the Leonardo's pins, 5 V logic, A0 .. A5 (0 .. 1023 for 0 .. 5 V), the RESET button, the L LED on D13, the ON
LED and the built-in serial monitor on the USB (Serial).
* The Leonardo's USB is also a keyboard and a mouse for the PC. Keyboard.h and Mouse.h (Arduino's names) send their
HID reports to the board model, and the board model plays the PC: a click on the ATmega32U4 opens the PC window -
a notepad that types what the board types (Shift, Caps Lock, Enter, Backspace, Tab; Ctrl+A / C / V / X / Z / S / N
act on it), the modifiers and keys held, the last shortcuts, a 1920 x 1080 screen with the mouse pointer, its clicks
(a right click opens a context menu) and the wheel; a Reports tab lists every report with its bytes.
TEP additions: the micro-USB opens the serial monitor, the ATmega32U4 the PC window; the LEDs glow in the simulation.
The board has no radio. For Wi-Fi, put an ESP-01 / ESP-01S on Serial1 (D0 / D1) and talk to it with AT commands, as the
demo does.
Limits (say them before you start): 16 MHz, 8 KB of RAM (the real ATmega32U4: 2.5 KB), the ATmega32U4's own registers
(its USB controller, Timer4, the PLL) are not there - write Arduino code, not registers. See MODEL SCOPE AND LIMITS.
ONE DEVICE (search "LEONARDO" in Pick Devices):
ARDUINO LEONARDO "Arduino Leonardo" V1.0 (Microprocessor ICs > Arduino Boards), prefix U, model TEPNET.DLL. The
serial monitor (115200 baud) has Monitor, Plotter and Board tabs (the Board tab: the ON and L LEDs, the RESET key,
every pin). The PC window has PC, Reports, Settings and Help tabs. Like every TEP window they have no Windows title
bar.
The same TEPNET.DLL also runs our other sketch boards, the ESP-01 / ESP-01S modules and the Laptop / Mobile WiFi
Monitors; it replaces any older TEPNET.DLL (keep only this newest one in MODELS).
TEST STATUS
V1.0: verified in Proteus 8.5 on 27 Oct 2026 with the demo project as shipped. What the Proteus run showed:
* Leonardo-Macro-Pad: the PC window opened with "USB HID: keyboard + mouse" (Keyboard.begin and Mouse.begin); the
monitor printed "Joining TEP-WiFi... connected", "Macro pad page: http://192.168.1.102/" and "Pads free, keys 0,
characters 0, IP 192.168.1.102, pages 0"; the TTP229's pop-up: 16 keys, single-key, active-low, a read every 20 ms
with 16 clocks; the ESP-01S's: ONLINE 192.168.1.102.
* The laptop (192.168.1.21) and the phone (192.168.1.41) opened http://192.168.1.102/ (HTTP 200, 653 bytes): the 16
keys as links.
* Pads 1 and 2 on the TTP229's pop-up: the notepad typed "Hello from the Arduino Leonardo!", "Regards," and "The
Engineering Projects". Pads 5, 6, 13, 7: Ctrl+A selected the text, Ctrl+C, a left click, Ctrl+V - the text twice.
* Pads 12, 12, 9, 9, 11: the pointer from 960, 540 to 1080, 300 with its trail; pad 14: a right click and the context
menu; pad 15: the wheel -3. Pad 16 (Ctrl+Z) took the paste back, pad 3 typed "Macro pad: 15 keys, 2 pages, up 24 s",
pad 8 (Ctrl+S): "notes.txt - Notepad, saved 1 time". The ON and L LEDs lit.
* HELLO tapped on the phone ("Page: /k1", "Key 1 (HELLO) from page") and ENTER on the laptop typed on the PC; the
Reports tab: 328 reports (e.g. 02 00 0F 00 00 00 00 00 = Shift + L).
* About 35 s of simulation in about 4 minutes with the two pop-ups, the PC window, the monitor and both tools open; no
errors.
INSTALLATION (about 3 minutes)
1. Close Proteus. Extract the WHOLE ZIP to a normal folder (e.g. Desktop).
2. Copy everything in "Proteus Library Files" to the LIBRARY folder of Proteus, for example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY
(on some PCs: C:\ProgramData\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY). TEPLEONARDO.LIB is the board;
the others are the demo's parts: TEPTTP229.LIB, TEPESP01S.LIB, TEPLAPTOP.LIB and TEPMOBILE.LIB.
3. Copy the DLLs from "Proteus Model Files" (TEPNET.DLL, TEPTTP229.DLL) to the MODELS folder
(...\Proteus 8 Professional\MODELS) - replace an older TEPNET.DLL (this one is the first that knows the Leonardo).
4. Delete TEPLEONARDO.IDX from the LIBRARY folder if it is there.
5. The Arduino IDE (only to compile your own sketches - the demo has its HEX file): copy the folder
"Arduino Code\TEP Boards for Proteus\hardware" into your sketchbook folder (normally Documents\Arduino), so that
Documents\Arduino\hardware\tep\avr\boards.txt exists (replace an older copy); restart the IDE. The Arduino AVR Boards
platform must be installed (it comes with IDE 1.8.x; in IDE 2.x install "Arduino AVR Boards" from the Boards Manager
once). Tools > Board > TEP Boards for Proteus > Arduino Leonardo (TEP Proteus). Keyboard and Mouse come with the
package (the IDE takes the board package's copies).
6. Start Proteus. In Pick Devices (P) search "LEONARDO".
RUN THE DEMO
Keep the .hex file and the DLLs beside the project in "Proteus Simulation".
Leonardo-Macro-Pad.pdsprj - U1 the Leonardo (Leonardo_Macro_Pad.hex) is a 16-key macro pad on its own USB: U3 = the
TTP229 16-key touch keypad (Advance; its TP2 pad bridged for 16 keys - the OPTIONS property) with SCL on D8 and SDO on
D7, and U2 = the ESP-01S on Serial1 (its TXD to D0 / RX, its RXD to D1 / TX; 115200 baud, AT commands). PC1 the Laptop
WiFi Monitor and MOB1 the Mobile WiFi Monitor open http://192.168.1.102/ (the ESP-01S is U2): the 16 keys as links.
Press Run. The PC window opens (Keyboard.begin and Mouse.begin: "USB HID: keyboard + mouse"), the ESP-01S joins
TEP-WiFi and the monitor prints the page's address. Click the pads on the TTP229's pop-up (or on the board):
pads 1 - 4 HELLO (types a line), SIGNATURE (two lines), REPORT (the pad's counts and uptime), ENTER
pads 5 - 8 SELECT ALL (Ctrl+A), COPY (Ctrl+C), PASTE (Ctrl+V), SAVE (Ctrl+S: "notes.txt - Notepad")
pads 9 - 12 the mouse UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT (120 pixels in 6 steps)
pads 13 - 16 CLICK (left), MENU (right click: the context menu), SCROLL (3 notches), UNDO (Ctrl+Z)
Every key flashes the L LED off while it runs and prints "Key n (NAME) from pad" on the monitor. A tap on the phone's
or the laptop's page runs the same macro ("from page"). The monitor takes KEY n, TYPE text, STATUS and AT commands for
the ESP-01S.
The modules' supplies: in the demo the ESP-01S's VCC and the TTP229's VCC go to Proteus' power rail (power terminals) -
their models read the supply as a digital level, which the board's 5V (an analog source) does not give them; on a real
board the ESP-01S needs its own 3.3 V regulator and the TTP229 sits on the 5V pin. Closed the monitor? Click the board's
micro-USB. Closed the PC window? Click the ATmega32U4.
THE PINS (the label on the board, what it can do in the simulation)
RX<0 / TX>1 D0 / D1: Serial1 (not the USB), GPIO
2 / 3 D2 / D3: Wire SDA / SCL (I2C, also on the SDA / SCL pins by AREF), GPIO
4 .. 13 GPIO, interrupt, analogWrite (PWM on 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13 on the real board; any pin in the
simulation); 13 is also the L LED
A0 .. A5 analogRead 0 .. 1023 for 0 .. 5 V; also GPIO 18 .. 23
5V / 3.3V 5 V (the board's logic) and a 3.3 V output
GND, RESET ground; RESET LOW holds the board in reset
AREF, IOREF, Vin drawn, not modelled
Serial is the USB (the board's monitor), not D0 / D1. SPI is on the ICSP header on a real Leonardo (not on D10 .. D13);
the header is drawn here, not wired. The pins are 5 V logic, as on the real Leonardo.
PROPERTIES (double-click the board > Edit Properties)
PROGRAM the sketch's HEX (Arduino IDE: Sketch > Export Compiled Binary with Arduino Leonardo (TEP Proteus))
MONITOR YES = the built-in serial monitor on the USB (Serial); BAUD its speed (115200, or AUTO)
AUTOOPEN YES = the monitor window opens at Run (the demo: YES); the PC window has "Open at Run" in its Settings
One Leonardo per design (its USB serial lines are hidden pins, and Proteus joins hidden pins of the same name across
parts).
TROUBLESHOOTING
* Nothing happens at Run: the HEX was not built with TEP Boards for Proteus - select Arduino Leonardo (TEP Proteus) and
export the binary again.
* The PC window says "waiting for Keyboard.begin()": the sketch has not called Keyboard.begin() / Mouse.begin() yet.
* Nothing is typed: the sketch sends keys only when its macro runs - check the pins of the keypad (SCL D8, SDO D7 in the
demo) and that the TTP229 has 16 keys (TP2 bridged) for pads 9 - 16.
* The ESP-01S does not answer, NO POWER on its pop-up: its VCC needs a digital supply (the power terminal, as in the
demo); TXD to D0 (RX), RXD to D1 (TX); Serial1.begin(115200).
* "Joining TEP-WiFi... FAILED": the sketch's SSID / password differ from the ESP-01S's WIFISSID / WIFIPASS.
* An integer goes wrong above 32767: int is 16 bits, as on the real ATmega32U4.
* The page shows old values: tap REFRESH (the monitors do not reload by themselves).
BUG REPORTS AND FEATURE REQUESTS
Please post them in our forum with a screenshot and the Serial Monitor text:
https://www.theengineeringprojects.com/forum/category/arduino-leonardo-proteus-library
LICENCES AND THIRD-PARTY NOTES
* The board model and the network (TEPNET.DLL, which also runs the ESP-01S), the symbols and artwork (TEPLEONARDO.LIB,
TEPESP01S.LIB, TEPLAPTOP.LIB, TEPMOBILE.LIB) and the keypad model (TEPTTP229 .LIB / .DLL) are made by The Engineering
Projects. The board's processor is Proteus's own ATmega2560 model. The source code of the models is not included.
* TEP Boards for Proteus (Arduino Code): its core, the variants and the EEPROM, SPI and Wire libraries are modified
copies of the Arduino AVR core 1.8.6 - GNU Lesser General Public License 2.1 (LGPL 2.1, the text:
LICENSE-LGPL-2.1.txt); its Keyboard and Mouse libraries (written by us with Arduino's names), its other libraries and
our core files are MIT (LICENSE-MIT.txt).
* The demo sketch uses the package's Keyboard and Mouse libraries and no third-party library (AT commands to the
ESP-01S, the TTP229 read with its own clock pulses); the .hex is included.
* Proteus is a product of Labcenter Electronics and is not included. Arduino and Leonardo are trademarks of Arduino
S.r.l.; ATmega32U4 is a name of Microchip Technology; TTP229 of Tontek. This library is not made or endorsed by them
or by Labcenter.
REBUILDING THE FIRMWARE (OPTIONAL)
The HEX file is supplied. Install TEP Boards for Proteus (INSTALLATION step 5), open Arduino Code\Leonardo_Macro_Pad,
select Arduino Leonardo (TEP Proteus) and use Sketch > Export Compiled Binary. For a real Leonardo select "Arduino
Leonardo" (Arduino AVR Boards) and upload - the same sketch, with Arduino's Keyboard and Mouse libraries from the
Library Manager. On a real PC the macro pad types into whatever window has the focus: try it with a text editor open.
MODEL SCOPE AND LIMITS
Modelled: the Leonardo's header pins on a hidden ATmega2560 (Proteus's AVR model, 16 MHz, 5 V); digital I/O,
analogRead (A0 .. A5) 0 .. 1023 for 0 .. 5 V, PWM (analogWrite) and attachInterrupt on any pin through the board model;
the RESET button, the L LED on D13, the ON LED; Serial (the USB, the board's monitor), Serial1 on D0 / D1, Wire on D2 /
D3, EEPROM; the USB HID: Keyboard (the en_US layout, six keys at once plus the modifiers) and Mouse (buttons, moves and
the wheel; one count = one pixel of the PC's 1920 x 1080 screen, no acceleration) with the PC window; Wi-Fi through a
TEP ESP-01 / ESP-01S on Serial1.
Not modelled: the ATmega32U4 itself (2.5 KB RAM, its USB controller and descriptors, Timer4, the PLL), the PC's answers
(the Caps Lock LED state, keyboard layouts other than en_US), media keys (Arduino's Keyboard library sends none, so the
PC window's MEDIA KEYS card stays idle with this board), the TX and RX LEDs (drawn, not driven),
SPI on the ICSP header, A6 .. A11 (the real board's extra analog inputs on D4, D6, D8, D9, D10 and D12: digital
here), VIN (7 - 12 V) and AREF. Upload over USB is not used (Proteus loads the HEX). The simulation
runs below real time.

FAQs9 questionsContact TEP
How do I download Arduino Leonardo Library for Proteus V1.0?
Wait for the 30-second guest countdown on this page, then press the download button; the file comes straight from our storage. Members who are logged in skip the wait. If the browser opens the file instead of saving it, use its Save as option. The download link is made for you when the countdown ends and works for 15 minutes; a saved or shared link stops working, so share this page instead.
What is inside the archive?
Arduino Leonardo Library for Proteus V1.0 comes as a ZIP archive of 197 files (3.1 MB, 6.8 MB unpacked) holding Proteus library files, simulation model DLLs, a Proteus simulation, an Arduino sketch, an Arduino library, compiled HEX firmware and source code. Open the File Structure tab for the full list of 197 files.
What should I do if the download does not start?
Check the browser's download list first; an ad blocker or a company firewall can also hold it back, so try another browser or network. If the file arrives incomplete, download it again. For an installation problem, read the Install tab or tell us in the comments with your software version and the exact error message.
Is this file free?
Yes. Every file in the TEP Download Center is free for learning, personal and student projects. If you share it, link back to this page or the tutorial so others find the latest version.
How do I check that the file arrived complete?
Compare its SHA-256 with the one on this page, d10869daf236701e8e7e2b44b564780418d3a3c6dcbc42a69a2a99313c7c7351. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash "arduino-leonardo-tep-v1-0-46a5276ece024d80b0d66e1693046e61.zip"; on macOS or Linux run shasum -a 256 "arduino-leonardo-tep-v1-0-46a5276ece024d80b0d66e1693046e61.zip". The same value means the file is exactly the one in our storage; a different one means the download broke off, so download it again.
Do I need WinRAR to open the ZIP file?
No. Windows, macOS and Linux open ZIP archives on their own (Extract All, or double-click). WinRAR and 7-Zip work too. Extract the whole archive before using the files.
Where do I put the LIB and IDX files?
Both files go into the LIBRARY folder of your Proteus installation (Proteus 8: C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY; Proteus 7 has the same folder under its own name). Restart Proteus afterwards and search for the component with P.
Which Proteus version does the library need?
The tutorial names the Proteus version the library was made and tested with. Most TEP libraries work in Proteus 7 and Proteus 8; if the component does not appear after a restart, check that both the LIB and the IDX file were copied and that Proteus was fully closed while copying.
How do I get the HEX file into the simulation?
Compile the sketch in the Arduino IDE (Sketch → Export Compiled Binary gives you the HEX next to the sketch), then in Proteus double-click the board, set Program File to that HEX and run.
Members skip the wait. Log in or join TEP.
