WHAT IS IT?
Proteus 8 has no Microchip ATmega32U4 model with its USB, so this is NOT a real ATmega32U4. It is the Arduino Micro -
the 48 x 18 mm board with 2 x 17 pins on the breadboard's 0.6" spacing, the ATmega32U4 (USB on the chip), micro-USB,
RESET, the ICSP pads and the L, TX, RX and ON LEDs - that runs YOUR Micro sketch in Proteus:
* You write a normal Micro sketch (D0 .. D13, MISO / SCK / MOSI / SS, A0 .. A5, LED_BUILTIN, Serial, Serial1, Wire,
SPI, EEPROM, analogRead 0 .. 1023, analogWrite, attachInterrupt, Keyboard, Mouse, HID-Project's Consumer ...) and
compile it in the Arduino IDE with our board package "TEP Boards for Proteus" 1.35.0 (in Arduino Code - see
INSTALLATION).
* Inside the board, Proteus's own ATmega2560 model runs the compiled sketch at 16 MHz; our model (TEPNET.DLL) wraps
it: the Micro's pins, 5 V logic, A0 .. A5 (0 .. 1023 for 0 .. 5 V), the RESET button, the L LED on D13, the ON LED
and the built-in serial monitor on the USB (Serial).
* The Micro's USB is also a keyboard, a mouse and a media-key device for the PC. Consumer (HID-Project.h, NicoHood's
names: Consumer.write(MEDIA_VOLUME_UP), MEDIA_PLAY_PAUSE, MEDIA_NEXT ...), Keyboard and Mouse send their HID reports
to the board model, and the board model plays the PC: a click on the ATmega32U4 opens the PC window - its MEDIA KEYS
card shows the volume (2 % a key, as Windows does), mute, playing / paused and the track; the notepad, the screen
and the shortcuts take the keyboard and the mouse; a Reports tab lists every report with its bytes.
TEP additions: the micro-USB opens the serial monitor, the ATmega32U4 the PC window; the LEDs glow in the simulation.
The board has no radio. For a network, put a W5500 / W5100 module on SPI (the Ethernet library), as the demo does.
Limits (say them before you start): 16 MHz, 8 KB of RAM (the real ATmega32U4: 2.5 KB), the ATmega32U4's own registers
(its USB controller, Timer4, the PLL) are not there - write Arduino code, not registers. See MODEL SCOPE AND LIMITS.
ONE DEVICE (search "MICRO" in Pick Devices):
ARDUINO MICRO "Arduino Micro" V1.0 (Microprocessor ICs > Arduino Boards), prefix U, model TEPNET.DLL. The serial
monitor (115200 baud) has Monitor, Plotter and Board tabs (the Board tab: the ON and L LEDs, the RESET key, every
pin). The PC window has PC, Reports, Settings and Help tabs. Like every TEP window they have no Windows title bar.
The same TEPNET.DLL also runs our other sketch boards, the W5500 module and the Laptop / Mobile WiFi Monitors; it
replaces any older TEPNET.DLL (keep only this newest one in MODELS).
TEST STATUS
V1.0: verified in Proteus 8.5 on 27 Oct 2026 with the demo project as shipped. What the Proteus run showed:
* Micro-Media-Knob: the PC window opened with "USB HID: media keys" (Consumer.begin) and its media player (track 1,
paused, 50 %); the monitor printed "Link: ON", "Media knob page: http://192.168.1.90/" and "Volume 50, paused, track
1, keys 0, page http://192.168.1.90/"; the OLED showed MEDIA KNOB, VOL 50, PAUSED; the W5500's pop-up: the link up,
192.168.1.90, the server on port 80.
* The laptop (192.168.1.21) and the phone (192.168.1.41) opened http://192.168.1.90/ (HTTP 200): PLAY / PAUSE, PREV,
NEXT, VOL -, VOL +, MUTE.
* CW x5 on the KY-040's pop-up: five "VOLUME UP (knob)" lines, the PC at 60 %; Press (0.2 s): "PLAY / PAUSE (knob) -
volume 60, playing", the L LED lit; CCW x1: 58 %; Hold, then Hold again a second later: "MUTE (knob)" - the PC
muted.
* NEXT on the phone ("Page: /next", track 2) and VOL + on the laptop ("VOLUME UP (page) - volume 60, playing", the sound
back); the Reports tab: MEDIA reports E9 00 / 00 00 (21 reports for 10 keys).
* About 22 s of simulation in about 3.5 minutes with the three pop-ups, the PC window, the monitor and both tools open;
no errors.
INSTALLATION (about 3 minutes)
1. Close Proteus. Extract the WHOLE ZIP to a normal folder (e.g. Desktop).
2. Copy everything in "Proteus Library Files" to the LIBRARY folder of Proteus, for example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY
(on some PCs: C:\ProgramData\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY). TEPMICRO.LIB is the board; the
others are the demo's parts: TEPKY040.LIB, TEPOLED12864.LIB, TEPW5500MOD.LIB, TEPLAPTOP.LIB and TEPMOBILE.LIB.
3. Copy the DLLs from "Proteus Model Files" (TEPNET.DLL, TEPKY040.DLL, TEPOLED.DLL) to the MODELS folder
(...\Proteus 8 Professional\MODELS) - replace an older TEPNET.DLL (this one is the first that knows the Micro).
4. Delete TEPMICRO.IDX from the LIBRARY folder if it is there.
5. The Arduino IDE (only to compile your own sketches - the demo has its HEX file): copy the folder
"Arduino Code\TEP Boards for Proteus\hardware" into your sketchbook folder (normally Documents\Arduino), so that
Documents\Arduino\hardware\tep\avr\boards.txt exists (replace an older copy); restart the IDE. The Arduino AVR Boards
platform must be installed (it comes with IDE 1.8.x; in IDE 2.x install "Arduino AVR Boards" from the Boards Manager
once). Tools > Board > TEP Boards for Proteus > Arduino Micro (TEP Proteus). HID-Project, Keyboard and Mouse come
with the package; for the demo also install "Adafruit SSD1306" (with Adafruit GFX and BusIO) and "Ethernet" from the
Library Manager.
6. Start Proteus. In Pick Devices (P) search "MICRO".
RUN THE DEMO
Keep the .hex file and the DLLs beside the project in "Proteus Simulation".
Micro-Media-Knob.pdsprj - U1 the Micro (Micro_Media_Knob.hex) is a volume knob for the PC on its own USB: U2 = the
KY-040 rotary encoder (Advance; CLK on D5, DT on D6, SW on D7), OLED1 = the 0.96" SSD1306 OLED (Advance; SDA on D2, SCL
on D3, address 0x3C) and U3 = the W5500 Ethernet module (SCS on D10, SCLK on SCK, MOSI on MOSI, MISO on MISO; a fixed
address 192.168.1.90). PC1 the Laptop WiFi Monitor and MOB1 the Mobile WiFi Monitor open http://192.168.1.90/.
Press Run. The PC window opens ("USB HID: media keys" - Consumer.begin), the W5500's link comes up and the monitor
prints the page's address; the OLED shows the volume. On the KY-040's pop-up:
CW x1 / CW x5 VOLUME UP for each click (the PC's volume +2 %) CCW x1 / CCW x5 VOLUME DOWN
Press (0.2 s) PLAY / PAUSE (the L LED lit while playing) Hold, then Hold again after a second MUTE
The page has PLAY / PAUSE, PREV, NEXT, VOL -, VOL +, MUTE and /json - the phone is a remote for the PC. Every key prints
a line ("VOLUME UP (knob) - volume 52, paused"); the monitor takes UP, DOWN, PLAY, NEXT, PREV, MUTE and STATUS.
The modules' supplies: in the demo the KY-040's, the OLED's and the W5500's supply pins go to Proteus' power rail (power
terminals) - their models read the supply as a digital level, which the board's 5V (an analog source) does not give
them; on a real board they sit on the Micro's 5V. Closed the monitor? Click the board's micro-USB. Closed the PC window?
Click the ATmega32U4.
THE PINS (the label on the board, what it can do in the simulation)
RX / TX D0 / D1: Serial1 (not the USB), GPIO
D2 / D3 Wire SDA / SCL (I2C), GPIO
D4 .. D13 GPIO, interrupt, analogWrite (PWM on 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13 on the real board; any pin in the
simulation); D13 is also the L LED
MISO / SCK / MOSI SPI (D14 / D15 / D16), GPIO
SS D17 (on the real Micro also the RX LED), GPIO
A0 .. A5 analogRead 0 .. 1023 for 0 .. 5 V; also GPIO 18 .. 23
5V / 3.3V 5 V (the board's logic) and a 3.3 V output
GND, RST ground; RST LOW holds the board in reset
AREF, NC, VIN drawn, not modelled
Serial is the USB (the board's monitor), not RX / TX. The pins are 5 V logic, as on the real Micro.
PROPERTIES (double-click the board > Edit Properties)
PROGRAM the sketch's HEX (Arduino IDE: Sketch > Export Compiled Binary with Arduino Micro (TEP Proteus))
MONITOR YES = the built-in serial monitor on the USB (Serial); BAUD its speed (115200, or AUTO)
AUTOOPEN YES = the monitor window opens at Run (the demo: YES); the PC window has "Open at Run" in its Settings
One Micro per design (its USB serial lines are hidden pins, and Proteus joins hidden pins of the same name across
parts).
TROUBLESHOOTING
* Nothing happens at Run: the HEX was not built with TEP Boards for Proteus - select Arduino Micro (TEP Proteus) and
export the binary again.
* The PC window says "waiting for Keyboard.begin()": the sketch has not called Consumer.begin(), Keyboard.begin() or
Mouse.begin() yet.
* The knob counts double or misses clicks: read CLK and DT on every edge (attachInterrupt CHANGE on both) and count a
click at the detent, as the demo's quadrature table does - the KY-040's contacts bounce.
* No page: the W5500's 5V needs a digital supply (the power terminal); SCS on D10 and Ethernet.init(10); the module's
CABLE IN.
* Blank OLED: SDA on D2, SCL on D3, address 0x3C; its VCC on the power terminal.
* An integer goes wrong above 32767: int is 16 bits, as on the real ATmega32U4.
* The page shows old values: tap REFRESH (the monitors do not reload by themselves).
BUG REPORTS AND FEATURE REQUESTS
Please post them in our forum with a screenshot and the Serial Monitor text:

REBUILDING THE FIRMWARE (OPTIONAL)
The HEX file is supplied. Install TEP Boards for Proteus (INSTALLATION step 5) and the demo's libraries, open Arduino
Code\Micro_Media_Knob, select Arduino Micro (TEP Proteus) and use Sketch > Export Compiled Binary. For a real Micro
select "Arduino Micro" (Arduino AVR Boards), install NicoHood's HID-Project from the Library Manager and upload - the
same sketch; the PC's volume follows the knob.
MODEL SCOPE AND LIMITS
Modelled: the Micro's header pins on a hidden ATmega2560 (Proteus's AVR model, 16 MHz, 5 V); digital I/O, analogRead (A0
.. A5) 0 .. 1023 for 0 .. 5 V, PWM (analogWrite) and attachInterrupt on any pin through the board model; the RESET
button, the L LED on D13, the ON LED; Serial (the USB, the board's monitor), Serial1 on RX / TX, Wire on D2 / D3, SPI on
MISO / SCK / MOSI, EEPROM; the USB HID: Consumer (one media key at a time: the first key held), Keyboard (the en_US
layout) and Mouse with the PC window. Not modelled: the ATmega32U4 itself (2.5 KB RAM, its USB controller and
descriptors, Timer4, the PLL), the PC's own volume (the MEDIA KEYS card counts the keys from 50 %: a real PC starts at
its own level), the TX and RX LEDs (drawn, not driven), A6 .. A11 (the real board's extra analog inputs on D4, D6, D8,
D9, D10 and D12: digital here), VIN and AREF. Upload over USB is not used (Proteus loads the HEX). The simulation runs
below real time.

FAQs9 questionsContact TEP
How do I download Arduino Micro Library for Proteus V1.0?
Wait for the 30-second guest countdown on this page, then press the download button; the file comes straight from our storage. Members who are logged in skip the wait. If the browser opens the file instead of saving it, use its Save as option. The download link is made for you when the countdown ends and works for 15 minutes; a saved or shared link stops working, so share this page instead.
What is inside the archive?
Arduino Micro Library for Proteus V1.0 comes as a ZIP archive of 204 files (3.5 MB, 7.8 MB unpacked) holding Proteus library files, simulation model DLLs, a Proteus simulation, an Arduino sketch, an Arduino library, compiled HEX firmware and source code. Open the File Structure tab for the full list of 204 files.
What should I do if the download does not start?
Check the browser's download list first; an ad blocker or a company firewall can also hold it back, so try another browser or network. If the file arrives incomplete, download it again. For an installation problem, read the Install tab or tell us in the comments with your software version and the exact error message.
Is this file free?
Yes. Every file in the TEP Download Center is free for learning, personal and student projects. If you share it, link back to this page or the tutorial so others find the latest version.
How do I check that the file arrived complete?
Compare its SHA-256 with the one on this page, 08a556f8b899c9647a1ea96b3a5cf39cb8b331d24b6fb48eff96aa379cba8128. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash "arduino-micro-tep-v1-0-3774c9fad7aa4c4b9a38ff600ebdce73.zip"; on macOS or Linux run shasum -a 256 "arduino-micro-tep-v1-0-3774c9fad7aa4c4b9a38ff600ebdce73.zip". The same value means the file is exactly the one in our storage; a different one means the download broke off, so download it again.
Do I need WinRAR to open the ZIP file?
No. Windows, macOS and Linux open ZIP archives on their own (Extract All, or double-click). WinRAR and 7-Zip work too. Extract the whole archive before using the files.
Where do I put the LIB and IDX files?
Both files go into the LIBRARY folder of your Proteus installation (Proteus 8: C:\Program Files (x86)\Labcenter Electronics\Proteus 8 Professional\LIBRARY; Proteus 7 has the same folder under its own name). Restart Proteus afterwards and search for the component with P.
Which Proteus version does the library need?
The tutorial names the Proteus version the library was made and tested with. Most TEP libraries work in Proteus 7 and Proteus 8; if the component does not appear after a restart, check that both the LIB and the IDX file were copied and that Proteus was fully closed while copying.
How do I get the HEX file into the simulation?
Compile the sketch in the Arduino IDE (Sketch → Export Compiled Binary gives you the HEX next to the sketch), then in Proteus double-click the board, set Program File to that HEX and run.
Members skip the wait. Log in or join TEP.
